What follows are the short films from this weekend's San Francisco International Animation Festival that in my opinion were most fantastic and that I think in one way or another stick with me forever. I Forgive You (Pierre Mousquet, Cauwe Jerome, Belgium 2009)Played as part of the Best of Annecy Program. An animation style reminiscent of The Simpsons. Two wrestlers fight, plot turns unexpectedly and the result is hilarious. San Francisco crowd chuckled with glee. Jean-Francois (Tom Haugomat, Bru...

Trulichka

Director: Jean Counet.
Time seems to have stopped in the village of Pededze in northeast Latvia. Animals are making noise, the wind is sighing and a wrinkly old lady, leaning on a curved walking cane, is chasing chickens out of the stable. But time has not stopped: on the contrary. Time is passing and Latvia has gone through some drastic changes during the past fifteen years. Trulichka is a portrayal of the life in Pededze village. There the old and new generations live side by side. Old folks reminisce over the good old Soviet times, lamenting the new life and unemployment following the fall of socialism. Some of their relatives have stayed behind Russian borders and without a visa they can’t go see each other. As to the youth of EU times, they don’t feel any need to visit their former motherland. Trulichka is a warm and humane depiction of the old making way for the new, and also of their mutual harmony in today’s Latvia, living under winds of change.

It's Raining Film at RAINDANCE

user
Well, no one ever accused London of hogging too much of the world's great weather. In fact, it can be said that one of the reasons for the imperialistic urges of the British Empire was to find sunny climes and get out of the fucking rain. Well, rain is not a bad thing when it is a celluloid downpour, and that is what is on tap when the 18th edition of the Raindance Film Festival begins in London on Wednesday evening. This year’s lineup, which includes 69 UK Premieres, is a co...
