Teatro Amazonas all set for the opening of the Amazonas Film Festival 9th edition

The Amazonas Theatre was built during the Belle Époque at a time when fortunes were made in the rubber boom. Construction of the Amazon Theatre was first proposed in 1881 by a member of the local House of Representatives, Antonio Jose Fernandes Júnior, who envisioned a "jewel" in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. In 1882, the State legislature approved so...

A whole new world at DIFF

user
Film allows you to see the world without leaving your seat. My third day at DIFF took me from Lisbon to a farm in Africa, the Deep South, the Philippines and Paris. Dark clouds rolled into Durban yesterday, but the sun always shines at the movies (thank you A-Ha). My first film was the wonderful black and white Portuguese film, Tabu. The competition film is filled with nostalgia. It is set in modern-day Lisbon and in 1930s colonial Africa. It is a wonderful love story remi...

Interview with Edgardo Cozarinsky at Istanbul Film Festival

user
An Argentine Istanbul writer… Memories of a lovelorn man, walking around Buenos Aires after a break up, unites with memories of world and cinema history. Poems praising the night are the music of the film. Screened within the “Challenging the Years” section of the Festival, Nocturnos addresses the audience on the point where literature and cinema come together. It is just like a sweet dream that leaves a short and temporary taste behind. Istanbul streets continue to inspire Edgardo...

M'zab l'architecture egalitaire

user
Director: José Manuel de S. Lopes.
When, in the beginning of the tenth century, the IBADITS settled in El-Atteuf, currently in the Algerian Sahara, looking for a safe haven from the FATIMIDS’ attacks, they considered their community to be in a stage of survival. Such means that luxury and exuberance were forbidden and the members of the community should be content with the very minimum. The austerity reflected in the style of the IBADITAS buildings of the M’zab is a result of a voluntary search for the essential, which largely responds to religious preoccupations

ZÉ DA GUINÉ CRÓNICA DUM AFRICANO EM LISBOA

Director: José Manuel de S. Lopes.
An African youngster, Zé da Guiné, arrives to Lisbon looking for an abundant city, a wonderful World, where all dreams can come true. By that time, in the mid-70s, the city is only abundant in its motion and words. There was no other richness, that richness of the cornucopia he was expecting. He tries to get used to this idea, which is facilitated by the size and movement of the city. He grasps the opportunity and does what he can do best, and which is taught by experience to every African: making the new with the old. He becomes acquainted and friend with all new currents’ protagonists, from arts to the media. He reinvents fashion and invents the night. It is the Brown, the Souk, the Rockhouse, the Noites Longas, the Bebop. Lisbon prevails the night, a colorful night, where all quadrants and all chapels meet and recognize each othr in the mythical Fridays of Noites Longas. Lisbon grows, proud of its people from so many places, and creeds. Before Zé da Guiné, nights were dark, cold and scary. A quarter of a century after, what remains of all this?

Viennale 2011 wrapped with an attendance close to 100 000

user
Coming to an end with today's screening of the closing film The Ides of March by George Clooney, the Viennale 2011 continues on its path of success. With an attendance of 96,700 at the 2011 festival as compared to last year's 96,300, the Viennale saw a slight increase in the number of visitors, less so than in previous years but at the same time an important and wonderful confirmation of the Viennale's steadily growing popularity. The festival's overall attendance figures also rose slightly fr...

Dancing with Dolphins in Festroia

user
The Portuguese already had their earthquake and somehow managed to survive and rebuild most of Lisbon since 1755. Although there was a little tremor during the week (about two-and-a-half on the Svetoslav Richter scale, or however it is called when measuring how much the earth moved for you), the otherwise sunny city of Setubal, one of Portugal's  most important port-resorts and home of the poet Bocage, manages to mount the 27th edition of the international film festival Festroia surmounting ma...

Kiss me now!

Director: José Ricardo Lopes.
In Tomar, on that afternoon of 1954, Isabel and André walked by each other on the street, smiled and immediately loved each other. They did not hesitate in following their path, but that was the most important moment of their lives. Because great love exists, because great love is intense, because great love is forgotten.
