One Day After Peace

user
Director: Erez Laufer & Miri Laufer.
Can the means used to resolve the conflict in South Africa be applied to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict? As someone who experienced both conflicts firsthand, Robi Damelin wonders about this. Born in South Africa during the apartheid era, she later lost her son, who was serving with the Israeli Army reserve in the Occupied Territories. At first she attempted to initiate a dialogue with the Palestinian who killed her child. When her overtures were rejected, she embarked on a journey back to South Africa to learn more about the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Committee in overcoming years of enmity. Robi’s thought-provoking journey leads from a place of deep personal pain to a belief that a better future is possible.

Jozi Kings movie reviewed by African Screens

#
Jozi Kings is the latest film by Black Irish Productions. Set in the modern day hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, South Africa, the film gives us a glimpse of the drug smuggling world, in this hard-hitting action drama. It is night and ‘Jim’ is seated on a cliff overlooking the glittering city of Johannesburg. He turns to ‘Chucks’, as blood trickles down the side of his mouth; he exhales the words, “Who knew Johannesburg is this beautiful at night?” Raw and unpredictable, Jozi Kin...

Documenting life

user
28 July: Day 4 Day 4 was filled with very serious movies and a light-hearted Canadian doccie that had its first screening outside North America. I loved St Henri, the 26th of August, maybe its because of my journalistic background as we're always trying to find these little stories in the community - the hairstylist, the boxer, the shopkeeper. It's candy to the soul. This Montreal suburb, although it seems ghetto-like, has wonderful characters and the 14 filmmakers did a fine job to f...

Durban in full swing

user
I have arrived yesterday 28 July and what a day it was! Flying in from Johannesburg was memorable as I saw two South African singing sensations making out at the drop-off. They can be compared to Bollywood stars as they have just starred in a local film together called Jakhalsdans where they fell in love on the set! It was something to behold to see thse two kissing as they would have been arrested in places like Dubai. The flight down - just under 50 mins - was routine and then Durban hit me...

Eco Lens at Durban DIFF 2010

Filmmakers are key agents in keeping a watchful eye on not just on social and political issues but on environmental abuse that often slips unobtrusively into our daily lives. A number of films at this year’s Durban International Film Festival conscientise us about the need for integrated approaches to development, and the threats to human ecology and environmental balance. With genetic modification shifting global food production increasingly further from nature, Scientists Under Attack is an ...
