Director: David Moolten.
Once a child laborer who trekked from Mexico to the fields of California to pick strawberries, Jose Hernandez recently traveled into space as an astronaut on the Discovery space shuttle. His story honors both the desperate struggle of immigrants and the greatness of which they are capable. This film and spoken word performance are a tribute.
I'm a poet interested in the interface between cinema and spoken word, using
video and animation, and have been creating short films with this
concept.
I grew up near Boston and have always loved movies and thought visually.
I'm also the author of three books of poetry, the most recent of which, Primitive
Mood, won the 2009 T.S. Eliot Prize (U.S.) from Truman State University
Press, and has just been published.

The seventh annual Independent Film Festival Boston kicked off on Wednesday night with Rian Johnson’s The Brothers Bloom, a romance tucked inside a comedy couched within a confidence scheme (a rom-com-con?). The romance, predictably, grows between a mark and one of the con men. The comedy is unexpected and liberally sprinkled throughout. While not integral to the plot, the humor is always welcome, never off mark and adds appreciably to the appeal of the film. The cons begin when the ...
At the Opening Night party for Independent Film Festival Boston 2008, I asked Managing Director Brian Tamm about the festival’s selection process and whether they keep any themes in mind when filling out the schedule. His response was: “We just try to select the best films we can. You guys [the press] tell us what the themes are.”
