WHY ARE YOU THERE?!

user
We're here at the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival and the house is already buzzing baby! In da house is Artistic Director Gary Anthony Williams, who you may remember from Boston Legal.  The Executive Director Jeannie Roshar who I'm not on speaking terms with as she just had a baby and looks amazing! Who needs that? Believe me when I tell you, we'll not be in any photos together!  Filmmakers have already begun bellying up to the bar and bending elbows for cocktail hour and the energy is amped....

IFFBoston 2009 – Day Six – Arts and Crafts

user
Tonight, fittingly, the screenings are at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art auditorium.  It is a great space with a striking view overlooking downtown Boston and the night-lit waterfront. It is a great space to see two films about two fields not always thought of as art, but that are certainly contemporary. The first, For the Love of Movies, chronicles the craft of film critique.  Breaking that history out into distinct eras and styles and sometimes dominant personalities, direct...

IFFBoston 2009 – Day Five – The World You Make with Forbidden: 3 of 3

user
Marco Bechis’ Birdwatchers could have gone horribly awry.  Surficially an extinction survival story, pitting a dwindling indigenous people against the encroachment of the outside world that encircles and threatens to strangle, it could have been a treacly morality tale espousing the nobility of the native against the evils of modernity and our collective lost way.  But it is not. What it is, is a take on competing interests making a place for themselves that has echoes of Israel and ...

IFFBoston 2009 – Day Four – Involuntary Travelers with Forbidden: 2 of 3

user
Geralyn Pezanoski’s Mine begins with a simple premise: What happened to the pets displaced by Hurricane Katrina? Once you begin there, however, every question answered gives rise to another unanswered.  Where are they displaced to?  Where will they go once they are delivered to safety?  Who will feed them, house them, give them medical care?  Does anyone remember where this pet came from?  Or that one? Can you find the original owners?  Should you? Or are the pets better off in ne...

IFFBoston 2009 – Day Two – Lost Loved Ones with Forbidden: 1 of 3

Hunger.  Fear.  Deprivation.  Death. These are the realities that seep into your pores while watching Kimjongilia – which is also the first in our Forbidden trilogy, spotlighting three documentaries that explore the places that we cannot go.  Today’s topic - North Korea: See No Evil. Through the eyes of witnesses, and perhaps mercifully not through our own, director NC Heiken shows us a glimpse of a world most of us will never see behind the veil of secrecy that has become ...

Oscar Frontrunners: Iraq versus The Economy

user
While most people go to the movies to escape the avalanche of bad news that seeks to overwhelm us, two films with topical subjects are emerging as the frontrunners in the Best Picture Oscar race. THE HURT LOCKER, the much lauded Iraqi War drama directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and UP IN THE AIR, the Jason Reitman-helmed, George Clooney-starrer that has the economy and corporate layoffs as its background motif, are the most honored films of the year so far by a range of critics groups and ...

Market Wrap Up For European Cinema

user
With 2009 coming to a close, which represented a challenge to the specialty distribution market in North America (and everywhere else), French cinema was the sole bright light in what has become a shrinking market for European quality film. While there were some celebrated films from Germany (The Baader Meinhof Complex), Spain (Broken Embraces), Italy (Gomorrah) and the UK (Bright Star, Hunger), their overall box office performances were considered very modest. The BBC co-prod...

The Global Film Village: Julie Hebert’s TREE a moving and poetic World Premiere play at [Inside] the Ford

user
by Marla Lewinphoto by Ed KriegerTree is a metaphor for the roots, branches, and leaves of a family. It seems both solid and enduring. TREE by Julie Hebert depicts three generations, divided by race, culture, time, and location.  Leo Price (Chuma Gault) is a divorced chef who is caring for an aging mother with dementia (Sloan Robinson) with the help of his college-age daughter, J.J. (Tessa Thompson). They connect when Didi Marcantel (Jacqueline Wright) a southern white woman barges into h...
