3,600 donors to honour Piers's 36 years with TIFF

Dear Film Lover,

After 36 years with TIFF, my friend Piers Handling is retiring.

I’ve known and worked alongside Piers for so long now, it’s hard to know what to say. There are so many memories, and there is so much to be proud of.

Under Piers's leadership, TIFF grew into a globally recognized film festival and one of the strongest cultural institutions in Canada. But it also grew into a community of film lovers that feel like an extended family to me and so many others.

Piers assembled an amazing group of people and empowered us to create something more meaningful than we ever imagined. TIFF is Piers's legacy, but thanks to his thoughtful approach, it’s also the legacy of so many people who contributed their passion and hard work.

To honour what Piers has done for all of us, I want him to retire knowing that TIFF is stronger than ever. We’re setting an ambitious goal for our annual fundraiser: 3,600 donors to honour Piers's 36 years with TIFF.

Will you share a note of thanks with Piers Handling, and make a donation to help us reach our goal of 3,600 donors to celebrate his 36 years with TIFF?

Piers has always had a bold vision for TIFF.

It began with his faith in Canadian cinema and his commitment to elevating Canadian filmmakers alongside the best filmmakers around the world. Piers was right about Canadian film, and he was right about Toronto’s potential as a city of film lovers.

From the beginning, Piers believed in Toronto. He saw the sophistication and diversity of film audiences here as a huge, untapped cultural asset. TIFF thrived by cherishing and cultivating our unique audience and by inviting the whole world to join us in our love of film.

Piers’s bet on Toronto and on our audience has paid off for decades. TIFF grew from an annual festival into a true cultural institution. And with the opening of TIFF Bell Lightbox in 2010, Canada and the world had a year-round centre where they could come together to experience and elevate the art of film.

TIFF is a one-of-a-kind cultural institution. And it grew from the bold vision of Piers Handling and the hard work of so many people he invited to work alongside him.

It’s hard to overstate how important TIFF has been to my life, and to the lives of so many filmmakers and film lovers — here in Toronto, and around the world. And for that, we owe Piers our thanks.

The best way to honour Piers's 36 years of leadership and service is to make sure TIFF can keep building on his work.

Take a minute to write a note of thanks to Piers, and make a donation to help us reach our goal of 3,600 donors to celebrate his 36 years with TIFF.

Happy holidays,
