Comedy '30 Love' wins best canadian short by Richard Stark

Richard received a great review in Inside Toronto.

insidetoronto

Richard E. Stark’s grandmother will finally have her wish of seeing her grandson’s name on the big screen come true when his movie, 30-Love, premiers Friday, Aug. 23 at the Montreal World Film Festival.

After escaping Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, his grandparents and father settled in Montreal, where his grandmother lived for 20 years before moving to North York.

Stark’s family, including his 87-year-old grandmother, will return to the city which represented freedom and a new life, he said.

Filmed in Los Angeles, where Stark has lived for the past nine years, 30-Love is a short comedy about Bruce (Ludwig Manukian) who drags his wife Jodi (Jennifer Cooley) to try to join a ritzy country club that’s way beyond their means. To get in, they must impress its snobby board members, an obnoxiously perfect couple, who have the wealth and status Bruce so badly wants. What begins as a friendly tennis game quickly deteriorates into an all-out class war, as the perfect couple take every opportunity to humiliate their opponents. Under the pressure of the match, Bruce and Jodi’s strained relationship is put to the test in front of a pretentious country club audience. Just as it seems as if his marriage is falling apart, Bruce realizes that his relationship with his wife is more important than his pursuit of social status....
