A world of HORRORS!!!Wow, it is really surprising just how many really, finely made horror films are out there right now. We are almost to the half-way point in our submission entries for 2012. The number of smart, well-made horror films is truly awe-inspiring! Just glad we set out 6 days to run movies and shorts! Oddly, for every twenty horror subject films we receive, we get one sci-fi or fantasy film??? Interesting. Which begs the question... are we in a time where filmmakers feel more deeply in touch with fear and uncertanty rather than the "fantastic" or mind bending questions of science fiction? Does a Bosch painting effect the human psyche more profoundly than an Escher or Monet? Are we, as filmmakers and film watchers, more drawn to that which goes bump in the night? Or are there certain decades when audiences are more in tune with "2001: A Space Odyssey"-- or times when they would prefer "Friday the 13th"? The question is... are the movies being made an accurate barometer of the emotional desires of a culture? Or are the desires of film goers rooted in something deeper and more primal... making the subjects that scare us a "constant" in, or collective needs and dreams?
