Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event Music Meets Film welcomes four-time Oscar nominee Danny Elfman as speaker

This year’s Music Meets Film held virtually along with the complete Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event programme, will give an insight into the creative layers of composers, film directors and industry leaders. One of the main speakers of the programme is four-time Oscar nominee Danny Elfman, who has established himself as one of the most versatile and accomplished film composers in the industry.

The conversation panel named “Choosing Doors: A Conversation with Danny Elfman” will discuss the paths Elfman has chosen in his creative life. After the initial conversation, participants will have the possibility to ask questions online from the composer directly.* The panel will be hosted by Marko Ahtisaari, Artistic Director of Helsinki Festival, designer entrepreneur and one half of the band Construction.

For over 30 years, Danny Elfman has established himself as one of the sought-after and acclaimed film composers in the world. A native of Los Angeles, Elfman grew up loving film music. He travelled the world as a young man, absorbing its musical diversity. He helped found the band Oingo Boingo, and came to the attention of a young Tim Burton, who asked him to write the score for Pee-wee´s Big Adventure. 34 years later, the two have forged one of the most fruitful composer-director collaborations in film history. In addition to his film work, Elfman wrote the iconic theme music for the television series The Simpsons and Desperate Housewives

During his long career, Elfman has collaborated with directors including Tim Burton, Gus Van Sant, Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, Ang Lee, Rob Minkoff, Guillermo del Toro, Brian De Palma, James Ponsoldt and David O´ Russell. Beginning with his first score on Tim Burton´s Pee-wee´s Big Adventure, Elfman has scored over 100 films, including Milk (Oscar-nominated), Good Will Hunting (Oscar-nominated), Big Fish (Oscar-nominated), Men in Black (Oscar-nominated), Edward Scissorhands, Batman, To Die For, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Justice League, Spiderman, A Simple Plan, Midnight RunSommersby, Dolores Claiborne, and the Errol Morris documentaries The Unknown Known and Standard Operating Procedure. Most recently he has provided music for Tim Burton film Dumbo for Disney, and The Grinch for Universal, and is currently working on the upcoming film The Voyage of Dr Doolittle (2020), starring Robert Downey Jr.

The programme of Music Meets Film, taking place for the 9th time in 2020, is primarily intended for composers and musicians aiming to create music for film and takes a look into what makes a film composer tick and how does the production aspect of music and film affect creative decisions.

* The panel “Choosing Doors: A Conversation with Danny Elfman” will take place on Wednesday, November 25 at 19:00 (CET). Everyone with accreditation to Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event will have the opportunity to watch the event live or as catchup later.

Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event is the one-week summit for film and audiovisual industry professionals held during PÖFF, on November 23-27, 2020. This year’s summit takes place fully online, welcoming projects and participants from around the globe. In 2020, Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event introduces Russia in Focus, a global presentation of Russian audiovisual content, film projects and creative talents at one of the key international co-production markets and producer's platforms to build strong ties between Russian and international creative industry players.

About Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

Started in 1997, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival has grown into one of the biggest film festivals in Northern Europe and busiest regional industry platforms, hosting more than 1000 guests and industry delegates and over 160 journalists. The festival screens around 250 features and more than 300 shorts and animations and sees an attendance of 80 000 people annually. In 2017 the festival was covered in 71 languages with a potential global media audience of over 1.1 billion people.

As of 2014 the festival holds the FIAPF accreditation for holding an international competition programme which puts the festival into the so- called A-category of film festivals, alongside other 14 festivals in the world (including Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, Karlovy Vary, San Sebastian, Shanghai, Tokyo etc).

Black Nights has an umbrella structure with two sub-festivals PÖFF Shorts and youth and children's film festival Just Film taking place concurrently with the main festival,
two off-season festivals - Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival and Tartu Love Film Festival - and a fully-fledged film industry platform Industry@Tallinn, organised jointly with the Baltic Event Co-production market.
