Pearl Jam Twenty, Directed by Cameron Crowe, NOW PLAYING AT IFC IN NYC

Reminder to the High School Class of 1991, it has been twenty years since you graduated, went on to college, and, for some, released your teenage angst by moshing around in your Dr. Martens to the new alternative grunge sound out of Seattle, Washington. Bands like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana and Pearl Jam,  were the line up at compilation concerts like Lollapalooza, and Off Ramp Cafe.

Cameron Crowe, director of “Say Anything” and “Almost Famous”, has done an amazing job at documenting Pearl Jam’s history paying homage to Andrew Wood and Mother Love Bone.  Seeing their frontman, Andy, struggle with drug addiction, overdose into a comatose state, be placed on life support, and later die, was enough for the remaining band members to realize there had been a death to the innocence of the scene.

Chris Cornell, lead vocalist from Soundgarden, recalls the day when he heard a voice on a demo tape that was unlike any other. He didn’t hear a singer trying to be another singer, and came to find a normal, personable, and enthusiastic person, that person was Eddie Vedder.  Eddie Vedder found happiness by taking bad emotions and learning to deal with them by expressing his feelings in songwriting. “Jeremy”, for example, was written as he was reading an article in the newspaper about a teen who had commit suicide in front of his classmates.

MUST SEE the film to hear Kurt Cobain’s real thoughts about Pearl Jam, what Eddie Vedder felt about overnight success as opposed to a natural, slow progression, about landing the cover of “Time” magazine, about press and interviews, not wanting the band to fall into one certain sound, Neil Young, soaring Ticketmaster prices, tragedy in Copenhagen, Denmark, touring, and varying the setlists.

Be sure to see them on tour now.
