Overview of the US business for the week of Monday, March 22nd

More than 50% of North American theatres were operating this weekend for the first time in nearly six months. These include cinemas in the critical markets of New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with additional re-openings planned for the weeks ahead.  As of Friday, 98% of AMC's 630 U.S. cinemas had re-opened.  What's more, the Studio Release Calendar is filling out for the months ahead, giving movie fans reasons to return to their local movie house.

At the box office, Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon held the top spot with $5.15M in its third week, adding up to a total cume to-date of $23.4M after 17 days in theatres. Warner Bros.' Tom & Jerry brought in $3.8M in weekend ticket sales in its fourth week, with a cume of $28.15M.  Roadside Attraction's crime thriller The Courier starring Benedict Cumberbatch opened this weekend at 1,433 theatres, earning $2.0M in ticket sales.

Our Popcorn Previews Boxoffice Buzz video looks at the Oscar-Nons - the non-nominated films and stars insiders thought would get into the Oscar race.

In our weekly summary of Industry News, we begin by highlighting last weeks's update from the U.S. Small Business Administration on the timeline and additional details on how exhibitors can apply for their share of $16B in grants available through the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program. We also highlight the annual THEME Report published last week by the Motion Picture Association, providing details on the extensive changes in 2020 to the theatrical and home entertainment market.

In the Hollywood Report, Martin Grove breaks down the chances that each of the Academy's Best Picture nominated films has to take home the Oscar.

Our Studio Release Calendar provides details on film releases through the end of May. We conclude with a list of the most recent studio release changes, MPAA film ratings announcements and one important new trailer released last week.
