Overview of the US business for the week of January 18th

At the box office, Open Road/Briarcliff's The Marksman opened to top spot with a weekend gross of $3.2M at 1,633 theatres. Comscore estimates that the Action-Thriller starring Liam Neeson will bring an estimated $3.7M after adding ticket sales for the Monday holiday. Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman 1984 dropped down to second place with $2.6M, after having led all films in each of the three weeks since its opening on Christmas Day.  Universal's The Croods: A New Age took third place with $2M, and now sits at $39.3M cume after eight weeks.

Note that only 37% of North American theatres are currently open and showing films with scheduled showtimes.

As awards season begin to warm up, our BOX OFFICE BUZZ video looks back at some of our favorite Best Picture Oscar Winners from the past decade, including The Artist, Slumdog Millionaire, The King's Speech and Argo.  In the Hollywood Report, Martin Grove reviews the most likely contenders in the categories of Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplay at the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards, with the annual ceremony scheduled for April 25th.

Our Industry News Summary begins with a positive forecast from analysts on the outlook for exhibition, with a particular focus on prospects for Cinemark and Marcus Theatres, the country's 3rd and 4th largest circuits. We highlight the massive 2021 film slate announced by Netflix last week, with the streamer on track to deliver a new feature film every week over the entire 12 months.

We conclude with our regular film data tables. The Studio Release Calendar provides details on film releases through early March, followed by a list of the most recent studio release changes, MPAA film ratings announcements and the most important new trailers released last week.
