Overview of the US business for the week of August 31st. Celebrating Ingrid Bergman

Each week, Comscore provides more details on the return of the North American box office. This weekend, The New Mutants took top spot with $7M in ticket sales for its opening weekend, playing in 2,412 locations across North America. Adding returns from 10 international markets, the teenage superhero Mutants took in a total of $9.9M. Solstice Studios' thriller Unhinged starring Russell Crowe delivered a strong second week, grossing $2.6M additional after last weekend's $4M opening weekend. Bill & Ted Face the Music from UA Releasing debuted to $1.06M while playing in 1,007 theatres.

Check out the Popcorn Previews Boxoffice Buzz, our new video feature looking at this weekend's ticket sales.

The summary Industry News begins with a report from Cineworld's CEO Mooky Greidinger on the encouraging, early results after their Regal Cinemas re-opened most of their theatres across North America. We mark the untimely passing of actor Chadwick Bosemen with remembrances celebrating his impact as one of Hollywood's most prominent actors over the last 8 years. We point to an excellent overview from the LA Times on experimentation by studios with non-traditional approaches to releasing films, and the dynamics that are driving these changes.

Gower Street breaks down the relationship between active COVID-19 cases and the opening status of movie theatres, dissected to the state-by-state level. This fascinating analysis measures progress on controlling the virus with progress on re-opening theatres, showing how the one does not necessarily track with the other.  In this week's Hollywood Report, Martin Grove points out the direct and indirect contribution of cinemas to the overall economy, concluding that movie-going impacts America's bottom line.

We conclude with our regular film data tables. The Weekly Film Calendar provides detail on film releases through the first week in November. We follow with a list of the latest studio release changes, MPAA film ratings announcements, a report on recent industry screenings and a list of important new trailers released last week.

Screendollars helps exhibitors stay informed about the schedule of Hollywood film releases, important industry news and how to maximize earnings from in-theater advertising. We encourage exhibitors to contact us to learn more about Screendollars in-theater advertising and marketing programs.
