Ronita TorcatoA little chit, a little chat, a little bit of this & that;meaning news, views & lotsa reviews from an independent journo based in Bombay aka Mumbai Spain ‘Country of Focus’ at 46th edition of the International Film Festival of India
"Spanish cinema is a centre-piece of Spanish contemporary culture. From Luis Buñuel’s mid-century masterpieces to Almodóvar’s “fin-de-siècle” follies, cinema has been both a tool to understand the evolution of Spanish society and a mirror to examine ourselves. " Thus spake Gustavo de Arístegui, Spain's Ambassador in India at the 46th IFFI in Goa. "Given the already existing interest in Spain (interest much fuelled by cinema, like in “Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara”), we thought it was the right occasion to showcase Spain’s filmmaking skills in IFFI. "
Seven films from the picturesque nation were screened to packed houses in Goa: “Isla Bonita”, directed by Fernando Colomo who also acts in the movie which is about choices, age and the importance of recognising happiness when it springs in our lives. Then, there are two films each from three masters. “Bad Education”, directed by Pedro Almódovar,a coming of age film which examines the scars left by the education system, religion and society. “Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown”, also directed by Almodóvar portrays high-spirited behaviour that makes the audience laugh.
"Goya In Bordeaux”, directed by Carlos Saura who gives full play to his life-long fascination with Francisco Goya and paints a poignant portrait of the Master’s solitude in exile in France. “Tango”, another Saura offering is shot in a the vivid style that emulates previous films, like “Flamenco”.
“The Sea Inside”, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, through its central character, a man ( Javier Bardem) paralysed from the neck down, meditates on vitality and decrepitude, and on life and death. “Thesis”, also helmed by Amenábar is a thriller set in the apparently cocooned environment of university life, where a string of gruesome events reveal that evil lies everywhere.
The Festival was also attended by Alejandra García Fuertes, Cultural and Press Affairs Counsellor, and Mr. Ignacio Ducasse Gutiérrez, Tourism Counsellor, Embassy of Spain.
Spain’s cultural institute, “Instituto Cervantes”, was set up in 2009 in India. Ms. Fuertes said that the Spanish people are interested in Indian culture and lifestyle and India would be most welcome to showcase its films in Spain. Mr. Gutiérrez said, “We have interesting locations for film shooting and have created infrastructure to facilitate shoots and have worked out various policies which can promote Indo-Spanish film collaborations”.
2016 will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and India.
