Rome Film Festival

Since its first edition, Rome Film Fest has taken place at the Auditorium Parco della Musica. The building complex designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano will host most of the screenings (Sala Sinopoli, Sala Petrassi, Teatro Studio Gianni Borgna Sala SIAE, AuditoriumArte), and exhibitions (foyer Sinopoli and foyer Petrassi, with the exhibition “Three Minutes”). The 1,300 square metres of the avenue leading to the Cavea (an open-air amphitheatre) will become one of the largest red carpets in the world.

The entire pedestrian area in front of the Auditorium will host the Cinema Village, which this year will feature the Cinema Hall – a purpose-built screening theatre created with the support of MiBAC’s Directorate-General for Cinema. Next to the Auditorium, there will be numerous pavilions and stands made of steel, glass, and wood, designed to offer Rome Film Fest audiences information and services.

The Food Area will be managed by Ferrarelle and will feature a restaurant and an area devoted to street food. Furthermore, the Cinema Village will host an info-point, a ticket box office, a BNL automatic cash dispenser and Rome Film Fest partners spaces designated as reception and promotion areas. Lastly, the exhibition “Riso amaro” will be held in the Village, as part of the project promoted by the Council of Ministers’ Department for Equal Opportunities preventing and fighting all forms of violence against women.

As is tradition by now, the Rome Film Fest reaches out to the rest of the Italian capital, collaborating with the most interesting cultural institutions and initiatives in the greater Rome metropolitan area.

The Auditorium at MAXXI – National Museum of XXI Century Arts (via Guido Reni 4a) will host meetings, conferences, several screenings from the Riflessi section, tributes and restored films, retrospectives, and the public event held the Rebibbia Women’s Ward, as well as repeat screenings of the Official Selection and special events. Casa del Cinema (largo Marcello Mastroianni 1) will host six screenings ahead of the opening of Rome Film Fest, along with a lineup of tributes, restored films, and films from the retrospectives, as well as the “Films of our Lives” showcase.

Cinema Trevi (vicolo del Puttarello 25) will host three film showcases courtesy of the Cineteca Nazionale dedicated to Antonella Lualdi, Roberto De Leonardis, and Luigi Magni, while the My Cityplex Savoy theatre (Via Bergamo, 17/25) will host the repeat screenings of the Official Selection and the Everybody’s Talking About It and Special Events programmes. In addition, Teatro Palladium (Piazza Bartolomeo Romano, 8), a historic Roman theatre in the Garbatella neighbourhood, owned by the Università Roma 3 for several years now, will be hosting a number of screenings from the Rome Film Fest lineup.

For the third year in a row, the Rome Film Fest will be back at the Auditorium of Rome’s Rebibbia Prison (New Annex), with three events: the screening of La stoffa dei sogni by Gianfranco Cabiddu, with the director and cast in attendance; the screening of Trek Point by Tommaso Cavallini, with a soundtrack by Italian pop band I Nomadi, who will perform some of the tracks written for the film after the screening; a tribute to the late Vittorio Taviani ,with the screening of Caesar Must Die. The Taviani family, along with the leading actors, who are no longer in prison, will attend the screening.

The 2018 Rome Film Festival will also be back with its screenings at the Rebibbia Women’s Ward, with the documentary Prove di libertà. Roma, quelli dell’articolo 21 by Carlo Bolzoni and Guglielmo Del Signore. The screening will be preceded by Parole in semilibertà directed by Francesca Tricarico, with a stage monologue by Daniela Savu.

The collaboration between MediCinema Italia Onlus and the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli IRCCScontinues for the second year in a row. Concurrently with the screenings at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, patients will be able to watch a series of films selected from the official lineup of the Rome Film Fest, carefully chosen for a very special audience.

After the remarkable success of the pilot project held in Via della Frezza last year, the thirteenth Rome Film Fest will celebrate a series of initiatives throughout the city, rolling out its iconic Red Carpet in the most famous streets in Rome’s downtown. Via dei Condotti, Via Veneto, Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, Via della Frezza (with the exhibition “The Prisoner” – “La prigioniera”) and the Galleria Alberto Sordi will all be the backdrops to “Accadrà sul Red Carpet” (It All Happens on the Red Carpet), an event combining music, dance, art and culture that celebrates the world of celluloid and its links to the Eternal City – conceived and organized by Hdrà. With its art shows, concerts, performances and book presentations, this will be a “festival alongside the festival” which allows the Auditorium Parco della Musica to spread deep into the heart of the city. All shops overlooking the aforementioned streets will be taking part in the initiative in several ways, such as store windows inspired by the Red Carpet, special discounts, and a touch of red – the iconic colour of the Rome Film Fest – which will colour building facades in Via Veneto, where bars and restaurants will be offering themed menus. All events will be free and open to the public.

During the Rome Film Fest, the exhibition dedicated to Marcello Mastroianni will be inaugurated at the Museum of the Ara Pacis – Lungotevere in Augusta – while the art show “Piero Tosi’s Exercises on Beauty: His Years at the CSC, 1988-2016” will be held at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, via Nazionale 194.

The Casa del Jazz, in Viale di Porta Ardeatina 55, will host a series of onstage conversations within the framework of the event entitled “The Magic Chord: Cinema and Jazz”. The presentation of the work/book “L’Infinito Presente” and all the events included in the second CNA Cinema Day will be held at the WeGil space (Largo Ascianghi 5).
