Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijόn

Another interesting film festival destination in Europe would be of course Spain and since I am in the FIPRESCI Jury of Gijon International Festival right now I wouldn’t be allowed to talk about film selection just yet, then I would just stress out that Gijon International Film Festival 2012 www.gijonfilmfestival.com in spite of the recent difficulties due to a dismissed previous director of the festival and his petitioned support by Almodovar, Egoyan, Solonz etc… of a world cinema, the festival is ready to rock. 16th - 24th of November new director of the festival Nacho Carballo, Spanish film director who has worked with José Luis Garci stated a suggestion that Gijón would foster “local cinema” referring to a beautiful and glamorous Spanish coastal Asturian Region that is home to Gijon in order to create a place of gathering for Asturian and International filmmakers. Never the less, in relation to a Serbian Cinema, Serbian filmmaker Dušan Makavejev was the one who was awarded on Gijon International Film Festival in 1989 and Emir Kusturica was the first to know the great news about the 50th edition of Gijon International Film Festival.

You can read Kusturica interview at http://en.fic.gijon.es/page/11447-emir-kusturica-i-wasn-t-set-to-be-a-fi... The festival awards various prizes in its competitive sections and collaborates in other initiatives Asturian filmmaking industry. Among the festival's national and international guests, either as members of the International Jury or presenting their films in the various sections of the festival we are noting the selection of names such as; John Cale, Maria Schneider, Monte Hellman, Paprika Steen, Julio Medem, Fele Martínez, Elvira Mínguez, Jorge Perugorría, María Esteve, Tristán Ulloa, Daniel Guzmán or recently reviewed in the blog Slovenian film director Jan Cvitkovic among the rest. The Festival relies on an International Jury, made up of at least five film professionals from different countries, Young Jury and a FIPRESCI Jury. Regarding to a great celebration and in the framework of the events celebrating the 50th edition of the Festival, an exhibit arranged and display the decades of souvenirs, photos and publications of a Festival inaugurated in June 1963 directed by Isaac Del Rivero and under the name Certamen Internacional de Cine-TV Infantil (International Children TV and Film Show). Forty-nine years and fifty editions have gone by since, and during this period Gijón, the Festival and its name have changed in everything but the will to carry forward a few days of good films on the coast. Actress Leticia Dolera, well known on Spanish film and TV hosted the opening ceremony for the Golden Jubilee of The Gijon International Film Festival on Friday, November 16 in Teatro Jovellanos, City’s Theatre Hall. During the opening ceremony the famous Asturian casting director Luis San Narciso was awarded with the Nacho Martínez Award for his whole professional career.
