by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

This just in: a quick news item from The International Press Academy about their 2022 Satellite Awards show, in a year when some Award Season regulars won't even have a red carpet or an event...

Los Angeles, CA: The International Press Academy (IPA) has named Tom Skerritt, indelibly famous for his TOP GUN franchise run, as the recipient of one its highest honors. Skerritt will received the “Mary Pickford Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to the Entertainment Industry” at the 26th Annual Satellite™ Awards.

For over fifty years, Tom Skerritt has been captivating audiences worldwide. The acclaimed actor has left more than one indelible mark on film, having crafted some of film and TV's most memorable characters.

Tom Skerritt is known for iconic roles in a string of hits from M.A.S.H., The Turning PointUp In Smoke, The Dead Zone, Top Gun, Steel Magnolias, A River Runs Through It, Singles, The Rookie, Smoke Signals to Jodie Foster's cult classic Contact.

And of course, Skerritt was 'Captain Dallas,' the big boss to Sigourney Weaver's Warrant Office 'Ripley' in Ridley Scott’s 1979 groundbreaking sci-fi movie, Alien.

For his work in the 1993-1997 CBS series "Picket Fences," he was recognized with the Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.”

And for his work as Ben Givens in East of the Mountains (2021), about a veterinarian who has cancer, Tom Skerritt is nominated for a Satellite™ Award in the category “Actor in a Motion Picture Drama.” This movie is also a nominee in the category “Motion Picture Drama.”

Skerritt joins the esteemed ranks of previous Mary Pickford honorees that include: Ellen Burstyn, Kathy Bates, Arnon Milchan, Martin Landau, Gena Rowlands, Vanessa Williams, Robert Evans, Karl Malden, Francis Ford Coppola, Maximilian Schell, Allan J. Pakula, Jodie Foster, Rod Steiger, Susan Sarandon, Mitzi Gaynor, Edward James Olmos, Mike Medavoy, Terence Stamp, Richard Donner, Louise Fletcher, Stacy Keach and Tilda Swinton among others.

ARTUR AMANALIEV to Receive the Breakthrough Performance Award

IPA established its Breakthrough Performance Award to honor an individual, who early in his or her career, demonstrates an exceptional artistic achievement and impressive talent. Artur Amanaliev, born on Dec. 21, 2010 in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan will receive this prestigious newcomer award.

Arthur’s mother remembers him as a mischievous and precocious child, even in preschool. He had no trouble keeping up with the more advanced pupils and was at the top of his class. A keen comic book fan, young Artur would often play-act as Spiderman at school.

His first role was in the short movie Tagdyr (Fate) by Azamat Arykov where he played a background actor.

Artur’s first leading role was in Shambala, where he plays the main character. The film was chosen by Kyrgyzstan as their official Oscar entry. The film won an Audience Award at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.

A gifted natural actor, Artur was discovered by Artykpai Suyundukov, the film’s director. The discovery came at an open casting call, where Amanaliev stood out because of an ‘inner sadness,’ which Suyundukov deemed critical for the complex character to be cast.

Previous Breakthrough Performance Award recipients include: Haley Joel Osment, Robert Brown, Dakota Fanning, Rupert Grint, Derek Luke, Freddie Highmore, Brandon Walters, Rupert Friend, Gabourey Sidibe, and Quvenzhane Wallis.

Official schedule of the 26th Annual Satellite Awards, celebrating achievements in Film, Television is as follows:

Feb. 10, 2022: Final voting ballots are due.

March 18, 2022 is the official date for the 26th Satellite Awards Presentation.
