TCM honors legend, icon Cicely Tyson on Jan. 31

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

It surprises many to realize Cicely Tyson (1924-2021) was once married to Miles Davis, and when she passed away on Jan. 28 at 96 years of age, younger audiences may have only remembered her from THE HELP. But her life was a wild ride of unexpected connections. Tyson modeled for Vogue, after being "discovered" on the pages of Ebony. The eloquent and preternaturally graceful actress received her first EMMY for "The Autobiography of Jane Pittman" in 1974. A star of the Walk of Fame followed in 1997.

In all, Cicely Tyson was nominated 14 times and won a total of three EMMYs. In 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, after Kennedy Center Awards, and rounded it out in 2018 with an honorary Oscar. But these moments just skim the surface of a brilliant, groundshaking, and indelible well-lived career. No one can assess the ripple-effect of her life's work on so many others, as well as the love she engendered in so many who followed into acting, and every aspect of the industry. Rest in peace.

So let's have TCM take over. On Jan. 31, they have a tribute coming... read on.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will celebrate the life and career of iconic actress Cicely Tyson with a programming tribute on Sunday, January 31. Tyson, who passed away on January 28 at the age of 96, broke barriers throughout her more than seven-decade career. Among awards she earned, the list includes a Peabody Award, an honorary Oscar ®, a Tony Award®, three Emmys®, a Kennedy Center Honor, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The iconic star's most recent Emmy nomination came just last year. In 2018, Cicely Tyson had her hand and footprints cemented in time at the TCM Chinese Theater Imax® in Hollywood during the TCM Classic Film Festival.

The following is the complete schedule for TCM's on-air tribute to Cicely Tyson:

TCM Remembers Cicely Tyson – Sunday, January 31 8:00 p.m. Sounder (1972) – Black sharecroppers during the Depression fight to get their children a decent education. 10:00 p.m. A Man Called Adam (1966) – A guilt-ridden jazz trumpeter blames himself for a car accident that killed his family.
