Golden Globes hit the gas with MANK in the tank leading the noms

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

There’s a scene in MANK from Netflix where the reading of a love letter turns into a rollover accident for Herman J. Mankiewicz, so with the Hollywood Foreign Press putting this movie in the lead of Golden Globes Nominees with six possible wins? Let’s hope that scenario in the gorgeous black and white film doesn’t turn out to be prophetic as this love letter to Old Hollywood as frontrunner but a red herring.

Over all, the 78th Annual Golden Globe nominees from HFPA looked to be an incredible mix of relevant bellwether films for the Oscars, including Chloe Zhao, director of NOMADLAND with three nominations, including a Best Actress for Frances McDormand.

The Best Actress race (still called “actress” not actor) is the one to watch this year.

Viola Davis in her searing turn in MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM faces off against McDormand, Carey Mulligan for nailing PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, and Vanessa Kirby in PIECES OF A WOMAN, with Andra Day as the outlier for THE UNITED STATES VS BILLIE HOLIDAY.

Male actor is nearly as thrilling with Gary Oldman’s titular character MANK, lined up with Chadwick Boseman for MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM, Riz Ahmed for SOUND OF METAL, and Tahar Rahim for THE MAURITANIAN with perennial favorite Anthony Hopkins for THE FATHER.

Best Picture did not disappoint, with MANK, NOMADLAND, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, THE FATHER, AND THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7. Norman Lear and Jane Fonda will receive the Special Achievement Awards. The Golden Globes will be held Feb. 28 at 5 pm on NBC, from Dick Clark Productions.
