Tim Roth To Attend Q&A for "600 Miles" & "Chronic" @ 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival

CHRONIC

Home hospice-care nurse David Wilson (Tim Roth) tends to his patients with a cold, dedicated proficiency that betrays a desperate inner life. Yearning for connection, he absorbs elements of his patients’ lives as his own, recklessly blurring the line between personal and professional, and holding at bay a devastating secret that threatens to unravel with the appearance of a mysterious young woman.

Acclaimed writer/director Michel Franco follows up his stunning Un Certain Regard-Winner After Luciawith this equally unflinching portrait of a soul that won’t heal and the emotional armor required to make it through the day. Wisely allowing scenes to unfold naturally in extended takes and keeping exposition to a minimum, the film is centered on Roth’s masterly turn as David, a performance that edges closer to “being” than “acting,” and bolstered by a fierce, terrific Robin Bartlett (American Horror Story) as a cancer patient with an unusual request.

“A pleasingly enigmatic character study... A captivating work.” Tim Grierson, Screen

600 Miles  {600 millas}

600 MILES

The film "600 Miles" is about a Mexican teenager who has smuggled weapons across the border from the USA and the American ATF agent he has almost inadvertently kidnapped (Kristyan Ferrer and Tim Roth) find themselves sharing a long and dangerous drive through brutal terrain in this low-key but utterly absorbing thriller from writer/director Gabriel Ripstein.

Ripstein (son of the veteran filmmaker Arturo) subverts the typical high-octane approach associated with the genre, and quietly makes a political point about the connection between laissez-faire US gun laws and the violence south of the border: the teenage Arnulfo and his buddy easily skirt what regulations exist in the USA to stockpile weapons for his trip south.

Ripstein’s quasi-documentry style (his DP Alain Marcoen is known for his work with the Dardennes) strips away the mythology and allure around cartels; his shoot-outs are raw and chaotic—a far cry from choreographed action movie fare and all the more visceral for it. Ultimately this is a character piece about two individuals from different sides forced to connect under extreme duress.
