OFF PLUS CAMERA

OFF PLUS CAMERA is a major event devoted to Polish and international independent cinema organized by The Society for Independent and Other Arts OFF CAMERA and Krakow Festival Office since 2008. . Our key objective is to give support to the filmmakers at the beginning of their careers. The most important element of the festival is the international competition, in which 12 independent directors from all over the world compete for the Krakow Film Award of $100,000. The winner is selected by an international jury and the award is given by the President of Krakow. Each year, approximately 100 films are presented during more than 200 screenings. Our Festival aspires to show – besides the newest productions – the classics of underground cinema through retrospective and tribute sections.

OFF PLUS CAMERA 2011 – the first titles revealed!

The programming novelties for this year's festival are: “Filming Women”, and a special section presenting new Irish, German and Asian cinema. Other sections include as usual the main competition “Making Way” (with $100k award), “Discoveries”, “From the Gut” and “Catching Up”.

In the section “FILMING WOMEN”, we will present “On Tour” (“Tournée”) directed by a popular French actor Mathieu Amalric. The film got excellent reviews and was awarded with Palme d'Or for directing, and received 7 Cesar nominations. Also, in the same section, we will present the feature debut of the famous American actress Drew Barrymore “Whip It”. To participate in her project she invited such celebrities as Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden and Juliette Lewis.

In the “DISCOVERIES” section we will present the most successful films from the greatest film festivals all over the world. Among them we will present a British film by Chrstopher Morris “Four Lions”. It tells a story of a few young Muslims in Sheffield, who, disappointed with their lives and the surrounding reality, decide to become suicide bombers. The film was a hit during last year's Sundance and the director also received BAFTA award for the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Other titles in this section include “Undertow” by Javier Fuentes-Leon, “Carrancho” by Pablo Trapero and “The Tempest” by Julie Taymor.

The “New Asian Cinema” will be represented by South Korean films “Poetry” by Chang-dong Lee and “Hanyo” by Sang-soo Im, which is a remake of the famous 1960 Korean film by Ki-young Kim “The Housemaid”. Both films competed last year for Palme d'Or in Cannes.
“Catching Up” is another section in the festival where you will be able to watch “Me and Orson Welles” made by a renowned indie film director Richard Linklater. He invited to the crew the teen idol Zac Efron, which was a controversial decision as commented by the film industry. This turned out to be a successful decision however (it has to be noted that Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Matthew McConaghey also debuted with Linklater). Another film in the section will be “The Killer of Sheep” by Charles Burnett which won the FIPRESCI award in Berlin.

This year's festival will be inaugurated with the screening of the newest film by a prolific Australian film director Peter Weir, “The Way Back”. “The Way Back” was inspired by a book written by Slawomir Rawicz "The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom"  - a tale of a heroic escape from a soviet gulag in 1940. The leading roles are played by famous Hollywood actors such as Colin Farrel and Ed Harris.
