Approximately 200 feature-length and short films are selected each year. For the 2018 Festival,13,468 film submissions from more than 190 countries were received.

The Festival also presents panels, music programming and the New Frontier exhibition of new media work.

The 2018 Festival was attended by at least 124,900 people, supported 3,323 local jobs and generated $191.6 million in economic activity and $55 million in state and local tax revenue, according to an independent economic and demographic study conducted by Y2 Analytics. The 2019 Festival will be January 24–February 3.

One of the largest independent film festivals in the U.S., Sundance arguably spotlights more up-and-coming directors than any other film fest. At the 2010 Oscars, four of the five films nominated for “Best Documentary” were Sundance films.
