The 19th Annual MV International Film Festival Comes to the MV Film Society Vineyard Haven, MA—The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is delighted to announce the 19th annual MV International Film Festival. It will be held from Tuesday, September 3rd, through Sunday, September 8th, at The Film Center in Vineyard Haven.
The festival will feature 12 films from over ten different countries and a short program of nine international films. Weextend a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors: Vineyard Wind, Mass Cultural Council, Tilton Tents, Cape Air, and Island Housing Trust.
The MVInternational Film Festival’s theme is “Other Places, Other People” to encourage attendees to think broadly and deeply about universal concerns that can unite people. About 90% of the films at the festival are non-US productions, which helps fulfill the goal of promoting cross-cultural understanding through film.
The festival opens on Tuesday, September 8th, with “Mighty Afrin: In the Time of the Floods” at 4:00 pm. 12-year-old Afrin is coming of age on a flood-ravaged island in Bangladesh. Director and cinematographer Angelos Rallis filmed over five years in the disappearing islands along the Brahmaputra River, capturing Afrin’s refusal to surrender to the deadly tides. With her home flooded, Afrin travels to Dhaka to find her estranged father. Afrin faces the impossible in a city teeming with danger and mystery as she hopes for a better future.

An enlightening presence
An aura of mystery always seems to surround great actresses, who are both familiar and elusive, who portray real-life characters so convincingly while at the same time giving the impression of coming from another world, bringing light through the silver screen into our hearts.
This description suits Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher perfectly. She has been a regular feature at Cinemed for several years now, for example in Il miracolo by Niccolò Ammaniti, Skies of Lebanon d'Alice by Chloé Mazlo, The Wonders or La Chimera by her sister Alice Rohrwacher, and last year in Stéphane Brizé's Out of Season, where she once again captured our hearts. We have also taken it to heart to pay tribute to this talented, precious and exceptional actress, whom we will have the great pleasure of welcoming at the 46th Cinemed, from 18th to 26th October.
Alba Rohrwacher will also be symbolising this new edition through our poster. She is enveloped in the soft golden light of the evening and a luminous midnight blue, her gaze turned upwards as if drawn towards a cinema screen. She extends an invitation to a moment suspended in time, just like when we are at the cinema, to escape from the furious pace of the world in an attempt to better understand our fellow human beings through the stories that filmmakers tell us.

Wild Genius by Susan Kucera (Living in the future's past, Hot Money, 12th hour...)
Social impact documentary on evolutionary biologist Robert Travis, 1h:12minutes USA December 2023
Wild Genius portrays the exceptional life, career and mental health challenges of living legend Robert Trivers, the evolutionary biologist TIME magazine named as “one of the greatest scientists of the 20th Century”. Harvard psychologist and best selling Author, Steven Pinker calls him “an under-appreciated genius, and one of history’s greatest thinkers in the analysis of behavior and emotion.” An advocate for civil rights, Trivers’ straightforward logic makes an empowering case: understanding our evolutionary past isn't a life sentence but a liberating force. Wild Genius is an entertaining and intellectual odyssey that challenges us to confront our evolutionary roots and societal taboos, daring us to think differently about ourselves and our place in the natural world. This isn't just the story of a groundbreaking scientist; it's an invitation to transform our understanding of life itself. We have the cognitive tools to know ourselves better and, by extension, to make a better world.
