There was great appreciation all along the panel today at the press conference for Dexter Fletcher's new Elton John biopic titled Rocketman. The film features upcoming stars Taron Egerton, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Richard Madden. The Cannes Film Festival is meant to be a platform to not only show movies to the public for the first time, but to enable the purchasing of film rights within the film market. Whether the films are documentaries shown in smaller theaters or those participating in competition, they have the chance to be purchased. The world of the festival and online viewing platforms have merged at this years festival with Amazon Studios acquiring the U.S. rights to Ladj Ly’s film “Les Misérables.” This film is in competition at this year’s festival and premiered Wednesday evening. Not only has Amazon shown interest in the film, Netflix has as well. This sale to Amazon marks a major milestone as it is the first on-site acquisition of a competition film. On top of this achievement, the film is in French, and is the first film by director Ladj Ly. This purchase could start a trend of both competition films and others being acquired by online streaming platforms in the future, whether that being somewhat during the remainder of the festival or during those to come.

Pakistan is appearing at Cannes 2019…

Durj%20Poster_Final_IMG-20190514-WA0123.jpg
Durj (THE CASKET) a film by Shamoon Abbasi, an Italian-born Pakistani filmmaker is making its way to Cannes. The film is wrapped in a mystery, and through this mystery it deals with a serious issue of cannibalism in Pakistan.
The film is based on the true events of two brothers who were caught red-handed eating human flesh of dead people burried in the grave yard. They were arrested in 2011, only to be freed in 2013, due to the absence of any laws regarding the cannibalism – as this heinous crime was never heard in Pakistan. At Cannes Dodi Khan, the producer and actor will be present and exchange with other international filmmakers about the creative work of the new breed of Pakistani filmmakers of which they are an integral part. Shamoon is the son of a well-known TV writer, Zubair Abbasi, said Aslam Ansari, a paris-based documentary filmmaker who has known both Shamoon and Zubair Abbasi from the time when they lived in Rome. Udayyan Raathore from Rowdy Raathore Productions is also collaborating for promoting Durj. Udayyan is at Cannes with his debut feature, TWOSOME, an unusual story of two strangers who get suck with each other for an entire night – and share their tales as how one’s ambitions and the inherent uncertainty in movie business ruin the lives…

40th Manaki Brothers Cinematographers International FilmFestival

September 14 to 21 September in Bitola, Macedonia

Now accepting submissions for the 40th edition of ICFF “Manaki Brothers”

The International Cinematographers’ Film Festival “MANAKI BROTHERS”, is the first and oldest international film festival dedicated to the creativity of cinematographers across the world. It started in 1979 at the initiative of one of the main founders-AFPM/the Association of Film Professionals of Macedonia (which also marks its 65 jubilee this year), and was co-organized with the host-city of Bitola and the Cinematheque of Macedonia, established in honor and inspired by the abundant photographic/cinematographic opus of the MANAKI brothers: Yanaki (1878-1954) and Milton (1880-1964), whose 135 birth anniversary is to be celebrated this year as well. Thus, naturally, the cornerstones of the future festival were laid, in the town at the foot of Pelister, the City of Consuls - Bitola, where the Manaki brothers had their photo-studio and cinema theater.

THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA», directed by Elena Demidova

The documentary film «THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA», directed by Elena Demidova, tells a story of one of the most famous lamas, Pandido Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov. His body is recognized as one of the sacred Buddhist objects of Russia and is being kept in the Ivolginsky Datsan. The Buddhist monks approach him as a living person.

Itigelov was born in 1852 and began his religious education at the age of sixteen years. In 1911, he was appointed the twelfth Pandido Khambo Lama as the Head of Russian Buryat Buddhists. Between 1913 and 1917, Itigelov was prominent in the spiritual life of Russian Empire. He took part in the Tercentenary celebrations of the House Romanov and opened first Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg. During First World War Itigelov presided over the society of "Buryat brothers", an organization helping the Russian army. After October Revolution, Itigelov resigned as head of the Buddhists. In 1927, aged seventy-five years, he asked other lamas to begin meditation ceremonies and funeral rites, since he said he was about to die. Itigelov left a testament asking to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture. On September 11, 2002, Itigelov's body was eventually exhumed in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan.

THE CREEPY LINE a film by M.A.Taylor 2018

"A film that Google does not want you to see  - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”.

Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.

There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.
