By Alex Deleon Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong: The all-American Astronaut Sketch by Nesta Morgan The most peculiar thing about the American moon landing of July 1969 Is how quickly it was forgotten and the vaunted Space Race with Russia shelved.  Also odd how quickly overnight space hero Neil Armstrong, the first man ever to set foot on the moon, faded into obscurity after his fifteen minutes of international fame. Had further space exploration been followed up with the s...

Some_Like_It_Hot_t400.png
By Alex Deleon           ~~ Tony, Marilyn, And Jack, in Some Like it Hot --   It is a fact of cinema life that films after many passages through the projection equipment eventually deteriorate and wear out, a fact which anyone who has viewed a scratched up mutilated old favorite in a time worn copy can painfully verify.  In recent years a movement has developed to digitally restore important landmarks of world cinema championed among others by such old...

It’s this time of the year, when the film elite gathers on a tiny island in Venice to celebrate cinema over gelato, pizza and spritz. And for the last decade, to have a preview of pretty much 80% of the future Oscar nominees and winners, to come in few months time.    And this year, the stars have aligned again for the Mostra Del Cinema of the Venice Biennale, with the 75th edition’s competition being the most exciting one could wish for.      The fest...

barratta%20barbera%20deltoro.jpg
By Alex Deleon, <filmfestivals.com>   The 76th Venice Film Festival (the oldest in the world) has gotten off to a slightly controversial start The main bones of contention: 1) Not enough films by femmes, 2) Participation of Netflix. Only one female entry in competition this year.  Mr. Barbera's explanation is quite simple. "we choose films on their qu...

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a six-part Western anthology film, a series of tales about the American frontier told through the unique and incomparable voice of Joel and Ethan Coen. Each chapter tells a distinct story about the American West. We’ve always loved anthology movies, especially those films made in Italy in the Sixties which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme. Having written an anthology of Western stories we attempted to do the ...

TORONTO PREVIEWS

"Access is the first step" Cameron Bailey

programmer_cameron.jpg
The first Toronto Film Festival I attended was in 1986, and I came as a student journalist. Even back then, the Festival of Festivals, as it was known, had a reputation for an open, global outlook. But the diversity of its films wasn’t always reflected in the diversity of its press corps. As the years passed and I moved from film critic to festival director, it’s become ever more clear that we can all do more to i...

Gali%20Guleiyan%2C%20Poster.jpg
Gali Guleiyan (In the Shadows), Review: Shadow boxing in labyrinthe thin A year after being shown at Busan and the Mumbai International Film Festival, Gali Guleiyan emerges from the shadows and arrives at cinema halls in India. A psycho-supernatural drama, it falters on both levels and offers only confusion as the intelligible narrative. Performances are of a high order, and so are the music score and cinematography, but how one wishes they were put to better use. In the walled city of Old D...

Halkaa, Review: Doing it in the open!

Halkaa%2C%20Poster.jpg
Halkaa, Review: Doing it in the open! Precisely the presumption of the makers of the film. Precisely the bane of filmgoers and film-critics. Furthering the cause of Swachh Bharat (Clean India), a central government campaign to promote, among other things, building of toilets in millions of Indian village homes, the film had to be subtle and extremely well-crafted to work. Sadly, it is neither. That it is made by much decorated director Nila Madhab Panda makes it a bitter pill to swallow. Hal...

Once Again, Review: Loneliness, Lunchbox and Love

Once Again, Review: Loneliness, Lunchbox and Love Films in which the actors speak softly, there are no item songs, no fights and no villains, no double entendre, no ghosts, no claptrap dialogues and no stars, are rare indeed. So, when such a movie arrives on the screens, it is time to applaud once again. Once Again, an Indo-German co-production, has many things going for it, and if only it had a more substantive narrative, it would rate among the best of the year. Having said that, I ask disc...

Stree, Review: Ironing ‘bored’

Stree%2C%20Poster.jpg
Stree, Review: Ironing ‘bored’ What do you call a female ghost? For want of a better word, the villagers who are haunted by this entity call it Stree (Hindi for woman). Fair enough. If English film-makers can call a ghost Entity, what is wrong with a Hindi film selecting Stree as its eponymous title? Mind you, this is no ordinary ghost that haunts or possesses the simple village-folk. It kidnaps only men, every year, with precise accuracy, on the same dates, and leaves behind only...

Searching%2C%20Poster.jpg
Searching, Review: Top-notch laptop thriller? An Asian American plays the main lead in this girl gone missing tale, while the missing daughter is played by Asian American girls at four different ages. That’s not all. Her mother is a former K-Pop star and her uncle is essayed by another Asian, making it probably a first in mainstream American cinema. Searching has the makings of a taut, top-notch thriller, but since it is treated with restraint and a matter-of-fact approach, it remains a...

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and sub-festivals open submissions

Logo

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF), Youth and Children’s Film Festival Just Film
and PÖFF Shorts have opened submissions for the 2018 edition.

The 22nd edition of PÖFF, running from November 16th to December 2nd, will see a major change in one of the three competition programmes of the festival. The former Estonian Film Competition that used to be judged by the same jury as the First Feature Competition will be turned into a new programme with its own international jury – the Baltic Film Competition – screening a selection of feature-length films made in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The programme requires Estonian premiere for the Lithuanian and Latvian films (no premiere requirements for Estonian films) and is designed as a showcase of the best Baltic cinematic output from the last year. The programme will have one award - Award for Best Baltic Feature Film with a grant of 3200 Euros, shared by the director and producer.

The festival will also continue its two other competition programmes. The Official Selection Competition will look for films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. With world, international or European premiere as a eligibility criterium.

The First Feature Competition, open for filmmakers presenting their feature debut, will accept films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. That have not had their world or international premiere.

Submissions are also open for all the non-competitive sections of the festival. The programme will include around 200 feature films and documentaries. The final day for submissions is the 17th of August.

The 17th Youth and Children’s film festival Just Film is looking for films for its youth and children’s competitions and documentary sections. Submissions will stay open until the 17th of August.

The 2nd PÖFF Shorts, showcasing short films and animations, will run from the 20th to the 25th of November. The festival saw the merging of two separate sub-festivals last year - the animation film festival Animated Dreams and the International Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers. The new festival has retained the identities and most programmes of the former festival. Submissions close on the 25th of August.

TAIPEI by Jason Lester Romance under influence - USA, first feature film 96 minutes

"Think Romeo and Juliet meets Trainspotting" - Filmfestivals.com Bruno Chatelin

Taipei%20Still%207.jpeg

Taipei is an adaptation of Tao Lin’s critically-acclaimed, cult favorite novel of the same name.

Two young New York writers fall in and out of love amidst a whirlwind of drugs, parties, technology, and travel. As one relationship collapses, another blooms for Erin, swept into the world of Paul Chen, a mysterious, charismatic author. When he proposes documenting every aspect of their new romance in an epic laptop-filmed “documentary”, the couple enter into a performative bad romance, fueled by substances and sleepless nights. Tracking the pair through a shotgun Niagara Falls wedding, an LSD trip in a New Jersey mansion, and to Taiwan, the country of Paul’s birth where the couple comes to confront their individual alienation, Taipei is a visually stunning, extremely contemporary portrayal of what it means to be young, alive, and in love in a digital world.
