Alpha, Review: Man and his best friend surviving in the Ice Age

Alpha, Review: Man and his best friend surviving in the Ice Age It’s not a dog who is man’s best friend in Alpha, but a wolf given that name by Keda, a young man who lived in Upper Paleolithic Europe 20,000 years ago. He is the son of the Chief of a small tribe of hunter-gatherers that hunts bison in the steppes every year, to store meat for the coming winter. Boring history and a geography channel lesson? Banish the thought. Alpha is a classy movie that ranks among the best seen ...

The Rider review: moviegoers are in for a treat.

Somehow Chloé Zhao's all-too-real film The Rider has remained somewhat under the radar, when compared to the many mediocre or even god-awful films that stay in the cinemas for months on end. Although it hailed high praise at Cannes in 2017, sadly it remains under-seen. The Chinese director/writer/producer uses a feminist approach to portray the vulnerable side of a modern day cowboy, Brady Jandreau playing a fictionalized version of himself, whose fateful head injury took ...

TAIPEI by Jason Lester Romance under influence - USA, first feature film 96 minutes

"Think Romeo and Juliet meets Trainspotting" - Bruno Chatelin

Taipei is an adaptation of Tao Lin’s critically-acclaimed, cult favorite novel of the same name.

Two young New York writers fall in and out of love amidst a whirlwind of drugs, parties, technology, and travel. As one relationship collapses, another blooms for Erin, swept into the world of Paul Chen, a mysterious, charismatic author. When he proposes documenting every aspect of their new romance in an epic laptop-filmed “documentary”, the couple enter into a performative bad romance, fueled by substances and sleepless nights. Tracking the pair through a shotgun Niagara Falls wedding, an LSD trip in a New Jersey mansion, and to Taiwan, the country of Paul’s birth where the couple comes to confront their individual alienation, Taipei is a visually stunning, extremely contemporary portrayal of what it means to be young, alive, and in love in a digital world.

Movies That Matter
