"Based on a true story, "The Well" (El Pozo) is a deeply compelling film that explores the complex reality for families living with autism."
Nicole Holland, IFQ Magazine
Rodolfo F. Carnevale in association with Aporía Productions is pleased to announce
the US Premiere of "The Well" (El Pozo).
The production, which is the first Argentinean film to tackle the delicate
subject of autism, screens on Thursday November 24 at 8pm at the Quad Cinema
(34 W13 St). FFW-NYC jury members announced that "The Well" has been nominated
for five major awards, including, Best International Feature, Best
International Director for Carnevale, Best Actress in a Feature Film for Ana
Fontan, Best Supporting Actor for Ezequiel Rodriguez,
and Best Score by composer Pablo Borghi.
"The Well " tells the story of a Pilar (Ana Fontan), a 26
year old autistic woman who does not communicate
with other people, she lives in her own world of fantasies, until
her family takes a decision that will change the course of their
lives. Her father wants to send
her to an Institution but her mother refuses, thus creating a
rift between the couple. The family begins to fragment: Alejo,
the youngest son, has conflicts at school and with his friends.
To make matters worse, Pilar suffers from increasingly
frequent attacks that make day-to-day life very challenging. Finally,
the family are forced to put her in an
Institution. She will find another way to live,
but something will happen that will change the course of
the family.
The well is co- produced by Carnevale and INCAA, San Luis Cinema and Aporía
Productions and co-written by Nicolas Manservigi. The carefully chosen cast members include: Eduardo
Blanco, Patricia Palmer, Ana Fontan, Ezequiel Rodriguez Tupac larriera, Adriana
Aizenberg, Dora Baret, Norma Pons, Maite Zumelzu, Natalia Denegri and Gustavo
Garzon.
On
the catalyst for the film Carnevale explained, "My younger brother was
diagnosed with autism at four years old. Family life became very difficult. For
that reason I wanted to use the medium of film to speak about the topic as well
as presenting a deeper understanding of the condition," explained Carnevale.
Co-writer
Manservigi added, "It is not a documentary, rather fiction based on a real life
situation. We want the film to be viewed by professionals in the public health
sector as well as families coping with autism, therefore we collaborated with
specialists, psychologists and psychiatrists. Without being controversial, the
film aims to highlight the debate about the best method of treatment for an
autistic family member
"We are so honored to show "The Well" in our prime
time evening slot," said Nicole Holland program director at FFW - NYC.
"Carnevale's sensitive subject matter, well-researched content, intelligent
writing and direction and the convincing acting are a credit to the cast. The
team richly deserve success and recognition, and we are very hopeful that it
will find a good audience and a distribution deal here in the States."
