Molodist injects 3D experiment from Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard and Edgar Pêra

“3X3D”: CLASSICS ARE EXPERIMENTING

de_crossing_boundaries14.jpg

An injection of 3D experiment from Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Godard and Edgar Pêra. As part of the "Cinergy" program of 43rd Molodist IFF you will have a chance to see the long-awaited ambitious project "3x3D": three stories, three explorations, three looks at cinema's evolution under the influence of 3D technologies – by three famous directors of our time.

The "3x3D" trilogy was initiated to mark the Portuguese city Guimaraes' year as European Capital of Culture (2012). In 2013 the non-conformist triptych was positively received at Cannes Film Festival, when it was screened at the closing of Critics’ Week.

"Three Disasters" is the first 3D experience of 82-year-old Jean-Luc Godard, the untiring rebel, pioneer of the French New Wave. The director theorizes the format, reflecting upon the memory and nature of cinema. He makes use of the offscreen commentary, split on 3 parts, marked by different textures and rhythms. "Three Disasters" is a taster of Godard’s upcoming 3D feature film "Farewell to Language".

The famous British director Peter Greenaway has been creating video installations and multimedia projects for 20 years, so his interest towards 3D is not incidental. "Just in Time" is a 20-minute journey to the city of Guimaraes through years and walls. The ancient frescos are being revived, the dead brought back to life, as the narration elegantly flows past the beautiful Portuguese architecture, accompanied by the string minimalism.

"Cinesapiens" by Portuguese avant-garde director Edgar Pêra closes the trilogy. As Godard, the director ponders over the cinema itself, but putting more stress on wit and theatricality. Vigorous and somehow resembling Lynch, he tries to follow the evolution of the spectator.

Peter Greenaway, director, screenwriter and professional painter, was born in 1942. His notable films include "The Falls", "Drowning By Numbers", "The Pillow Book", "The Draughtsman's Contract", "The Belly Of An Architect" and "A Zed & Two Noughts". Greenaway is interested in new format media, video installations, experimental short films. He collaborates with theatres, opera houses, also appearing as an occasional VJ.

Jean-Luc Godard is a father of post-modern cinema, a radical and uncompromising avant-garde director. His full-length debut "À Bout De Souffle" (1959) is considered a key film in the French New Wave. Godard deconstructs old forms, destroying the grammar, style and current basis of cinema language, rejecting traditional rules of plot, using hand-held camera, moving around the location. For Godard, cinema is not only a tool for exploration and representation, but also a way to influence the human consciousness.

Edgar Pêra was born in 1960 in Lisbon, where he first studied psychology, then switching to cinematography and film editing. His filmography includes about 100 experimental short movies. Pêra contributes to internet projects, live performances, as well as comic books production and art exhibitions. Director’s projects are both political and psychological.
