Marrakech International Film FestivalThe Marrakesh International Film Festival was created in 2001 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The event is organised by the Marrakesh Film Festival Foundation under the chairmanship of His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid. A key cinema event in Morocco and on the international stage, the Marrakesh Festival brings together important figures from the world of the arts, culture and media to the “Ochre City”. Through the years, the festival has attracted some of the most famous names in cinema from around the world. It has established its reputation and became an unmissable event on the cinema and media calendar. The Marrakesh Festival sets itself apart through quality programming and a unique artistic and editorial positioning which fosters openness to all forms of cinema. It is also a hot spot for young local talent thanks to its Cinécoles competition which awards the best short films from Moroccan cinema students. Today the Marrakesh Film Festival stands out as a leading artistic and cultural event unparalleled in the African continent and in the whole Arab world. Filmfestivals.com is very thrilled to witness the festival revival after a one year hiatus. An experienced international organization team joins for the 17th edition. The contract with Le Public System Cinema, the French company who had been organizing the festival for years, has not been renewed.

The Foundation of the Marrakech International Film Festival held its Board of Directors and its Ordinary General Assembly on Friday, June 22, 2018. and made the following announcement. As announced on June 30, 2017 during the previous Board of Directors, the Marrakech International Film Festival decided in 2017 to pause and reflect on its editorial line. The 17th edition will be held in early December 2018. Since 2001 and 16 editions, the FIFM has contributed to the influence of Morocco, as a land of film and filming, thus forming part of the tradition of openness and of universality of the Kingdom. He has also been heavily involved in promoting Moroccan cinema internationally.
In sixteen years, the most prestigious names in world cinema, whether from America, Africa, Europe, Asia or the Arab world have been hosted and celebrated in Marrakech. In 2018, the organization of the FIFM is entrusted to the teams of the Foundation.
Ms. Melita Toscan du Plantier, director of public relations in 2001 and 2002 and director of the Festival from 2003 to 2016 has been appointed advisor to Her Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Foundation of the International Film Festival of Marrakech.
The artistic direction and the programming were entrusted to a prestigious team coming from the biggest festivals: Christoph Terhechte was designated artistic director, he chaired the section Forum of the festival of Berlin from 2001 to 2018.
The programming team is also made up of: Ali Hajji worked on programming at MK2 in Paris, he was from 2002 to 2004 the general coordinator of the International Film Festival of Marrakech, then delegate director of the Casablanca Festival from 2005 to 2011 and artistic director of the European Film Weeks in Morocco from 2006 to 2017, in addition to his participation in the programming team, Ali Hajji is also appointed general coordinator.
Ms. Rasha Salti is curator, she has worked as a selector with various festivals including Abu Dhabi (2009 - 2010) and Toronto (2011 - 2015).
Ms. Anke Leweke is a film critic, a member of the selection committee of the Berlin Film Festival since 2002. She has been a consultant for the Shanghai International Film Festival since 2012 and since 2014 a consultant for the Hong Kong International Film Festival. Rémi Bonhomme is General Coordinator of the Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival.
The 17th edition of the FIFM will take place from November 30 to December 8, 2018.
