MarlaLewinGFVReporting on movies, film festivals, film production, premieres, movie events, industry trends and plays from around the world ![]() The Global Film Village: CLIO Honorary Award Winners Barry Manilow and Mark Cuban by Marla Lewin
The Clios is a great event, filled with brilliant people, ideas, and everyone focused on creating the next best thing in advertising and social media. The goal of the panels was to explore how can we connect and engage our audiences. How we can continue to offer a branding service which sells products, provides humor, and opens our hearts to an ever smaller international world. How to find the means to incorporate human interest and projects linked to product in new ways that resonate with our target audiences.
Last night to open the final awards show, there were icons from major name brand products. I danced with the Nestle Bunny, posed with a tuna fish taller than me named Charlie, and a Kool Aid character in a red suit. There was also the Michelin man who seemed to have a hard time dancing, it must have been those radial steel belts making him less agile. Morris the Cat was a real feline and he wasn't interested in dancing at all.
There was a golden dressed female acrobat who hung from the ceiling and beautifully resembled the awards which were handed out to those whose creative genius wowed the juries. "Got Milk," was placed into the Hall of Fame, joining such iconic campaigns as "I'd like to Give the world a Coke."
Then Barry Manilow took the stage and gushed that he finally won his Clio, after starting his career in jingles, which he credited for teaching him how to create melodies that stick with people. He than belted out tune after tune of advertising jingles he had created.
Leaving Las Vegas, The Hard Rock Hotel, all my new friends, the winners from NY, Costa Rica, Germany, London, I too had left a winner, of an Apple iTouch sponsored by Yahoo, at one of the after pool parties. I can now Twitter.
I looked up and as we headed to the freeway, I saw a sign for a shop selling Stripper Supplies. The Overture for Pal Joey began to play on my iPod, It got me thinking about what other composers might have written jingles, and I remembered being in NY in 1994 with Dorothy Hart for the Revival of Pal Joey at the City Center. It got me thinking what if other composers and lyricists like Larry Hart had written jingles, Then Bebe Neuwirth sang the song "Zip." So essentially Larry did write a jingle, and here are some of the lyrics in the song "Zip!" dedicated to Gypsy Rose Lee: I met her at the Yankee Clipper and she didn't unzip one zipper, I said "Miss Lee, you are such an artist, tell me why you never miss, What do you think of while you work?
And she said, While I work my thoughts go something like this. Zip! Walter Lippmann wasn't brilliant today, Zip! Will Saroyan ever write a great play? Zip! I was reading Schopenhauer last night. Zip! I'm an intellectual. Zip, I'm a heterosexual. Zip! It took intellect to master my art. Zip! Who the hell is Margie Hart? (a reference to another stripper) Zip! I consider Dali's paintings passe. Zip! Can they make the Metropolitan pay? Zip! I have read the great Kabala, and I simply worship Allah. Zip! I am just a mystic, I'm misogynistic. Zip! My intelligence is guiding my hand. Zip! Who the hell is Sally Rand? (a reference to another stripper) Zip! Tocanini leads the greatest of bands. zip! JERGEN'S LOTION does the trick for his hands.....
