Institute of Documentary Film

Institute of Documentary Film (IDF) has been supporting creative documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe since 2001. IDF provides both emerging and experienced filmmakers with training, financing, networking and pitching opportunities, helps them get international attention and co-productions, rewards the exceptional projects with Awards and further opportunities and improves their orientation on the international market. The promotional and practical service of IDF includes a wide range of online and offline catalogues being created annually, updating a thorough database of CEE documentaries and  professionals and a calendar of important deadlines for producers, and bringing news from the world of documentary film in general via dokweb.net and social media. To the audience of documentary enthusiasts, IDF also brings a rich programme of lectures, presentations and screenings in their home regions or during IDF’s industry events.

In 2008 IDF was granted the European Documentary Network Award - Medal of Excellence.

Apply for East Doc Forum and Market - deadline November 10, 2017!

Over the past 15 years the East Doc Forum has hosted more than 700 filmmakers and producers from Central and Eastern Europe. Regularly, over 120 decision makers - commissioning editors, distributors, film fund representatives and festival programmers from Europe and North America are coming. Over 150 documentary films have been completed with the direct support of the East Doc Forum, including such internationally successful titles as Rabbit á la Berlin, Something Better to Come, Gangster of Love, Sofia’s Last Ambulance, Ukrainian Sheriffs, or Brothers.

Right now, the submissions are open for project in the development and early production stage - find more information HERE.

21 feature-length projects (including 12 projects participating in the year-round Ex Oriente Film workshop) will be selected to the central pitch, taking place March 8, 2018 and preceded by a 5-day preparatory workshop. “East Doc Forum gives an outstanding visibility to these projects and facilitates the initial networking. We make sure the filmmaker later not only meets the interested decision makers at one-on-one meetings but receives a wide feedback during a series of round-tables. This is a great platform to test what resonates with the international audience.” explains Tereza Šimíková, the new head of East Doc Platform.

East Doc Market instead, is designed for projects later in production and the post-production. Over the course of two days, filmmakers pitch their projects at their own table, through a speed-dating marathon of curated individual meetings. The teams behind 30 selected projects, including 5 cross-media and 5 Czech projects meet partners of their own choice or the ones who requested specifically to meet the project. Over two days, more than 400 15-minute long meetings are scheduled.

The format of the market offers a very efficient way to work at the East Doc Platform,” says Šimíková and adds: “Within the list of all our decision makers, the filmmakers choose the ones who could be really relevant for their projects. We schedule those meetings for them and add others, requested by decision makers themselves. That gives a very good idea to the producers on where their film works the best and what are the distribution platforms to use when the film is ready.

Feature-length and cross-media projects, series and shorts in production and post are also invited to apply for the Market by November 10, 2017.
