Creation, A Film About Charles Darwin, CUNY Graduate Center, Wednesday Oct 20, 7PM
Creation tells the story of Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany) and his tortuous struggle to produce his best known work, “On the Origin of Species.” In 1859 England, Darwin is wrestling with the death of his eldest daughter, Annie, at age 10. As his research into evolution and natural selection continues, he imagines Annie conversing with him, and he is more alive speaking to her memory than he is with his wife, Emma (a severe Jennifer Connelly, Bettany’s actual spouse), their three surviving children and the scientists who need him to put his theories on paper so they can use it as a rallying point for rational thought.
Screening followed by a panel discussion with director Jon Amiel and Randal Keynes, British conservationist, author and a great-great-grandson of Charles Darwin
Seduce Me
Isabella Rosselini’s all new series about Animal Attraction Directed, written by and starring Isabella Rossellini, Green Porno and Seduce Me are a series of two-minute portraits, which explore the unconventional seduction rituals of creatures ranging from bugs to marine animals. SEDUCE ME offers an entertaining yet informative and scientifically accurate look into the bizarre seduction rituals that often precede the mating process.

The Center for Inquiry joins for the 2010 Imagine Science Film Festival as a media sponsor. The mission of the Center for Inquiry is to foster a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values.
Filmmaker’s Fund
Imagine Science Films is more than a film festival—we are a collaborative community of filmmakers, audience, venues and neighborhoods. One of our most innovative programs, is The Imagine Science Filmmaker’s Fund, a slate of grants given to selected filmmakers whose work celebrates the marriage of science in fiction. This year, the Filmmaker’s Fund will be supporting Radiant, a film about the infamous couple Pierre et Marie Curie, the infamous couple, in for their pioneering work in the study of radioactivity.
Film Lab
At the 3rd Annual Imagine Science Film Festival, we will announce the launch of the ISF Film lab and its first participants, The Film Lab is a new ISF project that turns the science lab into the film studio, bringing scientists and filmmakers together in a unique and mutually educating way. Disposable to be shown at BiFF
Director and ISFF founder Alexis Gambis’s new short film, Disposable, will be shown at the indieScreen venue on June 5th and also on June 7th during the 13th Brooklyn International Film Festival. The festival will feature many science films, including the U.S. debut of Higgs, a documentary from the Netherlands focusing on the search for “The God Particle” through the famed and controversial Large Hadron Collider.

Science and the film festival phenom
With the release of Science Volume 327 this month, the publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) — and the 2009 ISFF Presenting Sponsor — examined a growing international trend of science film festivals. Reporting from France, Martin Enserink describes some of the science festivals around the world and their sometimes flexible descriptions of what constitutes a science film.
Enserink turned to ISF’s own Alexis Gambis to help shed some light on what science festivals are looking for, both in terms of film submissions and educational and entertainment goals, the financial problems the festivals are faced with and the growth of science-in-film, including blockbusters like James Cameron’s hit film,Avatar.

Why science needs us
Sizzle (featured in the 2009 Imagine Science Film Festival) made a plea to the science community to recognize the important of science in film in his January 7th article. “Why the world of science needs The Imagine Science Film Festival” describes the unique challenges of being a filmmaker versus his many years as a scientist, and why the combination of the two professions is so important for science and culture alike.

ISFF 2010 needs you!
Imagine Science Films is looking for donations and volunteers to help us prepare for an exciting new year. 2010 marks the beginning of THE FILM LAB, an exciting new program that will bring scientists and filmmaker’s together in the laboratory; ISFF 2010 New York; and the new ISFF 2010 London, a shorter film festival that will be taking on the science buffs of England in the coming year.
We are still running our $20 Give-and-Get program: make a $20 dollar donation to ISF and get a free Imagine Science Films t-shirt or, another way of looking at it, purchase an ISF tee for $20 and help out a worthy science and culture cause. The ISFF needs your support!
New ISF film, Disposable, coming soon
Director and ISF Founder/Artistic Director Alexis Gambis recently completed filming his latest short film, Disposable. The film deals with the topic of technology interfering with relationships and was filmed in ISF’s homebase, New York City. The film will be added to the website once it has been completed.

This year’s Imagine Science Film Festival includes 50 Films (4 features and 46 shorts) which will be shown over 10-days. The 2009 FILMS and SCHEDULE are now online.

Film submissions have CLOSED
August 15th was the absolute final date for submitting your film for the 2009 Imagine Science Film Festival. Notifications will be sent to filmmakers in mid-September. We ask those who have made submissions to please refrain from contacting us until September 15th, as we’re knee-deep in wonderful films right now and won’t be able to respond till we’ve sorted our way out.
Films postmarked by August 15th will still be eligible for the 2009 ISFF, as well as those submitted through Withoutabox on or before that day. Film submissions will reopen in 2010 for next year’s film festival.
Screening benefit tickets now online
Imagine Science Film Festival fans can now get their tickets ($10 online or at the door) to our September 9th, 2009 Screening Benefit and Concert at Paperless Post. The event will take place at the Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, and feature performances from NYC music collective TRANSIT, plus a showing of Animated Minds (2003). The screening benefit will begin at 8 pm.

Our website was recently offline (July 24th – 26th) as we changed hosts. Imagine Science Films has undergone such rapid expansion that we felt it was necessary to make the change, and as the result of a few minor issues imaginesciencefilms.com was unavailable until the afternoon of the 27th. Tantalizing new awards for film submissions
Due to recent website downtime, the film submissionsfinal deadline has been extended to August 15th for late film submissions. We will be offering the followingawards this year for the films selected for competition:
In 2009, we’ll be recognizing our runners up for the Nature Scientific Merit Award and the ISF Productions Award in addition to the winners. Second place winners will receive a t-shirt and poster, plus recognition on our website.
We’ll also be offering a new award called The Scientist Award, sponsored by Imagine Science Films Productions. Films made by scientists are eligible, and the winner will receive a MinoHD Flip camera and a t-shirt. The goal of this award is to encourage more scientists to create science films, letting the world into their labs and in on the scientific process.
The Hollywood Math and Science Film Consulting Harlem Math and Science Award will also be postponed until 2010; the winner will receive a tee in addition to the $500 award.

The contest, for videos uploaded to our ISFF Vimeo Group, will continue year-round. Winning videos will be displayed on our site for one week.
