Hero “An-Magritt” opens 6th edition of Europe Beyond Europe in Paris

The theme for this year’s Europe Beyond Europe film festival that takes place March 15-24 at the Entrépot Cinéma in Paris is Heroes and Antiheroes. What film then would be more appropriate – even today – as opening film than Arne Skouen’s 1969 Norwegian classic “An-Magritt”?

Liv Ullman gives a strong lead performance as An-Magritt, a young girl born out of wedlock in 17th century rural Norway. This society is completely dominated by men, and An-Magritt has to fight with all her power to survive – physically and psychologically. She shows enormous strength – the sort of innate strength that human beings bring forth when there is simply no room for weakness or the slightest self-doubt.

I wonder how she would do in our urban society today. Today’s problems and societal structure are completely different, of course, but I imagine her as a modern hero as well. With all that power, I think she would be a breath of fresh air and empower many women – and men – today. She certainly inspired my fellow premiere guests and me.
