Goya Awards

The Goya Awards, known in Spanish as los Premios Goya, are Spain's main national film awards, considered the Spanish equivalent to the American Academy Awards. The awards were established in 1987, a year after the founding of the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España, and the first awards ceremony took place on March 16, 1987 at the Teatro Lope de Vega, Madrid.

The ceremony continues to take place annually around the end of January, and awards are given to films produced during the previous year. The award itself is a small bronze bust of Francisco de Goya created by the sculptor José Luis Fernández.

Dani Rovira hosting the 29th Goya Awards

Dani Rovira will be hosting the Goya Awards ceremony next February in Madrid.

Stand-up comedian and star of the biggest box office hit in Spanish history, `8 Apellidos Vascos’, Dani Rovira may be himself one of the nominees.

His name was announced today by the President of the Spanish Academia, Enrique González Macho.  Dani Rovira attended the media relaxed and happy. He said that when he was asked he immediately said yes but then when he got home, he freaked out. It´s a big responsibility but he will remember all these many years of standup and just do it.

He promised to host a gala celebrating the great moment the Spanish cinema is having this year and to have a show full of comedy and music.

Please, let be it and not that long and boring show we are used to. It´s really difficult to mix fun with that long list of awards to be handed and those endless speeches anyway.

Next to be announced: the Honorary Goya Award.
