French Embassy New York Party for Restored "Les Enfants du Paradis"/ Gary Lucas plays Coffin Joe at SXSW!!What a great party last night at the French Embassy here in NYC for the restoration of Marcel Carne's seminal "Les Enfants du Paradis"! One of my favorite films, possibly the best film of all time--and a new restored print wll soon be available on DVD through Criterion and is about to commence a 3 week run at the Film Forum here.
As usual, the crowd at these parties was exceptionally glittery--hung out with my old friend Dr. Annette Insdorf who is a film scholar par excellence and the author of "Indelible Shadows: Film in the Holocaust" and a superb intime book about her close friend Francois Truffaut...hung out with Peter Becker from Criterion, Rose Kuo the head of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, my old friend Richard Porton the editor of Cineaste Magazine, the great cultural affairs writer Geoffrey O'Brien, and met and chatted with famous scenarist and director James Toback ("Black and White") who is heading to Cannes soon to improvise a film with his friend Alec Baldwin. And as usual the food and food and drink at these Fremch Embassy parties was fantastique! I am going bac for the closing party on Sunday! Thisi event coincided with the Rendezvous with French Cinema series now unspooling at the Walter Reade Theater in Lincoln Center where many new French films are previewed--go if you have a chance!! Next up for me is my performance at SXSW in Austin March 17th of my live solo guitar score accompanying Coffin Joe/Jose Mojica Marins' legendary 1966 Brazilian cult horror film "Esta Noite Encarnerei no teu Cadaver" ("This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse"). I am performing it twice, once at noon at the Alamo Ritz Cinema for the SXSW Film Festival and again at 11pm at the Hideout Theater for the SXS Music Festival. You have to hear and see this!!
Check out my web page for clips with my original solo guitar music on the soundtrack and details at http://garylucas.com/www/cadaver Check the poster on this page
See you at a show soon I hope!!
