flicksartThe FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF), has secured its place in the global community as the portal for the best in international independent cinema, earning the respect of domestic and foreign filmmakers, filmgoers and trend watchers. This confluence of art and commerce brought together world-class celebrities, award-winning filmmakers, new talent and audience members in record numbers last year. Ranked as one of the top 12 Festivals in the United States, RIIFF is also a qualifying festival for the Short Film Academy Award through its affiliation with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. There are 65 film festivals worldwide which share this distinction and RIIFF is the only festival in New England. ![]() RIIFF ANNOUNCES 2007 HORROR SCREENPLAY COMPETITION WINNERS: New Screenplay Contest to Become Annual EventPROVIDENCE, RI (12/28/07) – Horror writers traded in their machetes for pens and entered their screenplays in the first annual Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) Horror Screenplay Contest. Three top-prize winners were announced today.
“The horror genre is becoming one of our most popular,” commented Adam Short, manager of the screenplay contest. “Our Horror Film Festival draws more submissions and larger audiences every year. We thought it was time to recognize the writers who craft these entertaining films. Our contest is designed to give these talented scriptwriters a chance to network with filmmakers and to refine their craft.”
Each submission was analyzed and scored according to a set of five criteria, including Characters, Dialogue, Setting, Plot, and Technique. After much reading and deliberation among the judges, the prizewinners were chosen:
Grand Prize “The Companion” by Dickinson M. Upson, Rehoboth, MA A reclusive spinster tries in vain to escape the ghosts of her past by hiring a mysterious girl as an overnight companion for her invalid brother- who is confined to an upstairs bedroom in the family’s Martha’s Vineyard mansion.
First Prize “Circle of Fire” by Aaron Price, Windsor, NY A German officer, stationed in Romania during WWII, is drawn to the mystery surrounding a Romanian woman and her brother.
Second Prize “Child in the Dark” by Ian Ogden & Damian Lahey, Brooklyn, NY On the night a suburban neighborhood is overcome by a maddening disease, a blind ten-year-old is left to fend for herself. Her only guide is a man on a CB radio. He will be there by sunrise, but before then, she must survive the attacks by people infected with a feverish hunger for violence.
Honorable Mention “Cadaver” by Steven Arvanites, New York, NY A maverick cop murders a serial killer in cold blood, accepts the adulation for the execution, and then lies about the clouded circumstances. He is subsequently taunted by a “copycat” killer and must struggle to prove that the murdered serial killer is still very much alive and part of a traveling cadaver exhibit.
Over $5,000 dollars in prizes will be awarded to the winners of the screenplay competition and include: software from Final Draft, magazine subscriptions from MovieMaker Magazine, and free passes to the 2008 Rhode Island International Film Festival, 2008 Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival, and ScriptBiz Screenwriter’s Workshop.
