Wim Wenders will be this year’s Honorary Award winner at 10th Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival

To celebrate 10 years of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF), held annually in the city of Palma, Mallorca, Benito Zambrano (Solas)’s Mallorca-set Pan de Limón con Semillas de Amapola (Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake) will kick-off the festivities and the seminal filmmaker Wim Wenders will be presented with the festival’s highest accolade; the Evolution Honorary Award.

The international film festival has been curated by Mallorcan native and Festival Director Sandra Lipski for the last 10 years as a physical, 7-day event for locals and global guests alike. It will this year take place from October 27th, when Zambrano’s film will screen to an invited audience at Palma’s historic opera house, Teatre Principal. The festival runs through November 2nd.

Wenders will be honoured over the opening weekend of the festival and a special screening of his prize-winning Until the End of the World (1991) will form part of the 10th anniversary programme.

Said Lipski of today’s announcement, “We are welcoming Benito Zambrano back to EMIFF exactly 10 years after his film La Voz Dormida launched our festival’s very first edition in 2012! To celebrate the festival’s birthday with a film shot almost entirely on the island and with a filmmaker we consider part of the EMIFF family is really special.

“It’s also an absolute thrill that Mr. Wim Wenders will be this year’s Honorary Award winner in what is a truly significant year for Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival; I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 10 years of ‘Bridging Cultures’ - which is what our festival passionately stands for - than to spotlight the inspirational and innovative work of Wim and to pay tribute to how his filmmaking has altered perspectives and pushed the needle.”

Previous guests of the festival and awards honourees at EMIFF have included acclaimed international filmmakers Asif Kapadia, Fernando Trueba, Marjane Satrapi, Tobias Lindholm and Paul Haggis; as well as actors Mads Mikkelsen, Danny Devitio, Ana de Armas, Angela Molina, Melissa Leo and Lena Heady, amongst others.

Award-winning Spanish screenwriter and film director Benito Zambrano commented, “The worst thing about commemorations is seeing how quickly time passes, and the best thing is being alive - and alive in the world of cinema. Being at EMIFF again is a sign that I can still do what I like the most: shoot films and share them with the public. For the latter, festivals are essential. Long live the Cinema and EMIFF!”

Said Wenders of today’s announcement: “I like the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival for several reasons. I've had excellent shooting experiences on the island and have met really great and very professional local crews, with a friendly spirit, full of enthusiasm. I like the amazing natural light, the people and the many unique locations I have found there. And I support EMIFF because it vigorously promotes independent cinema. Festivals like this one have never played a more important role in creating bridges between peoples and cultures, bringing new talent to light and thus creating much needed new opportunities for young filmmakers”.

Further recipients of the festival’s 2021 Vision, Icon and Evolutionary awards - which pay tribute to filmmakers, performers and newcomers respectively - are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The full Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival 2021 programme will be announced via a press conference in Mallorca in early October. Additional festival events, including new networking sessions, panels and industry discussions and special events to celebrate 10 years of EMIFF are set to be announced regularly in the run-up to the festival.
