TIE: The International Experimental Cinema Exposition

Opening Program: Frans Zwartjes
TIE is thrilled to announce that three newly restored films by Frans Zwartjes will be opening The International Experimental Cinema Exposition - 2006.

Frans Zwartjes (1927) is a filmmaker, musician, drawer, painter and sculptor. Sexuality, psychosis, cruelty, power and powerlessness are ever recurring themes in his films. The general idea of reality is broken down by brilliant camera work and neurotic editing to replace it with a personal and often disturbing reality.

The Filmmuseum has preserved the films as part of the three year project ‘de Collectie Nederland van de Experimentele Film’ and made special new prints with support of the Mondriaan Foundation. A Dutch Masters Filmbank program. Special thanks to Ralph McKay.

Closing Program: "The Illiac Passion" by Gregory J. Markopoulos
"The Illiac Passion" by Gregory J. Markopoulos is a newly restored print that has rarely been seen in the United States.

"While in his writings Markopoulos posited the timelessness of classical themes, his treatment of myth -- in narratives that are fueled by sensuality and interior experience -- was startlingly modern. He spoke of deploying "incarnate individuals or character figures" instead of actors. The vitality of his approach is exemplified in his imaginative casting of 23 friends and underground figures, including Andy Warhol, Jack Smith, and Taylor Mead, as mythical beings in... The Illiac Passion. Kristin M. Jones

Special thanks to Temenos Inc. and Association for their phenomenal work on the Gregory Markopoulos restoration project.

Festival Dates: October 11-15, 2006
In addition the the film programs mentioned in the newsletter, TIE had previously announced: Pablo Marin's 35mm film, "Blocking" (pictured left) making its world premier at TIE as well as Thorsten Fleisch with an expanded cinema piece and several of his Super-8 films in a themed program.

More announcements coming soon, including info on the programs at the International Film Series and First Person Cinema in Boulder, Colorado.
