They killed Sister Dorothy wins 2 prizes at SXSW

The powerful and anticipated documentary about a nun’s murder in the Amazon, THEY KILLED SISTER DOROTHY won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival on Tuesday night. Director Daniel Junge, Oscar-winning producer Nigel Noble, producer Henry Ansbacher, and Dorothy’s best friend and colleague Sister Becky Spires were in attendance to receive the awards. David Stang, who survived her and continues to seek justice for her death in Brazil, had left Austin earlier that day, but received the news that evening at his home in Denver.

Produced by the Just Media Fund, THEY KILLED SISTER DOROTHY follows the powerful real-life courtroom drama that unfolds at the trials of her killers and explores her life’s work in the Brazilian rainforest that led to that fateful day.On February 12, 2005, Sister Dorothy Stang, a 73 year-old catholic nun from Ohio, was shot six times at point blank range and left to die on a muddy Amazon road. Her murder shocked the world and exposed a sordid battle in the Brazilian rainforest.

Narrated by Martin Sheen and produced by Academy Award® winner Nigel Nobel, THEY KILLED SISTER DOROTHY weaves a tale of murder mystery and courtroom drama with surprising twists set against the larger battle for the rainforest.

The Just Media Fund is a non-profit organization that aspires to impact the current media landscape and to realize the potential of media to engender a sense of connectedness among members of our global community. Just Media’s mission is to raise awareness of current social and environmental issues in the broadest audience through the development and production of innovative and compelling media projects.
