The new Borders on Film program at San Diego Latina Fest

The San Diego Latino Film Festival has announced the expanded programs as well as new offerings for the upcoming 14th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival , which takes place on March 8-18, 2007 at the UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas at Hazard Center. The festival is set to broaden its reach by evolving into the region’s first bi-national Latino film festival.

On hand to announce this cross border union was Tijuana Municipal President, Ing. Jorge Hank Rhon and from the Office of Mayor Jerry Sanders, Deputy Chief of Neighborhoods and Customer Service Dr. Ted Martinez Jr. Both city leaders spoke about the cultural ties that bind both cities and the entire region together. “With one of the most vibrant and important Latino populations in the Western Hemisphere, San Diego and Tijuana have come together to bring about a dual-nation Latino film festival that is sure to garner international attention,” said Media Arts Center San Diego Executive Director Ethan van Thillo.

BORDERS ON FILM

Borders on Film brings our celebrations to both sides of the border; uniting US and Mexican audiences during our eleven day festival. San Diego Latino Film Festival continues to stand out as a leader among North American Festivals because of its unique presence as a link between the US and Mexico with the busiest border in the world. Films within the Borders on Film program highlight important issues such as free trade, immigration, bunational relationships, maquilardora businesses, clash of cultures, and the simple act of crossing an international border.

In 2007, Borders on Filmwill invite special guest actors and filmmakers from selected films being presented as part of San Diego Latino Film festival. Invited guests include Alejandro Gonzalez Inarrittu (Babel), Carlos Bolado (Solo Dios Sabe), or Gregory Nava (Borderland). Audiences will have an opportunity to hear from these special guests during Q&A sessions, special receptions, and tributes.

The new Borders on Film program has been developed in association with the City of Tijuana and is a testament to the cooperative spirit that exists within the region. We are excited to see this new program grow in the future.
