Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

 

 

 

Sonoma's program of 120 films, 39 feature/doc premieres from 35 Countries is set.

A festival 25 years in the making, Sonoma International Film Festival celebrates this milestone with a slate of more than 120 independent, international films screening—including 79 premieres—during the 25th Anniversary Sonoma International Film Festival (SIFF) March 23-27.

 

The fun-filled, completely walkable festival in the heart of Sonoma Valley Wine Country, will also play host to two one-of-a-kind culinary events, special parties, panels, a Virtual Reality experience, live music and free public events including the ever-popular Sonoma Valley High School Media Arts Showcase, the UFO Program, Chaplin Silent Film, and a Free Family Screening Event.

 

“This landmark festival is designed to showcase the best in new films from around the world, international film talent, unbelievable culinary events, local favorite free public events, and a whole lot of fun for festivalgoers in between,” said Kevin W. McNeely, SIFF Artistic Director.

SIFF Cinematic Excellence Awarded to Film Star Jacqueline Bisset:

Actress Jacqueline Bisset will be awarded the SIFF Cinematic Excellence Award for her body of work at the festival’s 25th Anniversary edition on Friday, March 25 in conjunction with the screening of her most recent role in the Northern California premiere of LOREN & ROSE directed by Russell Brown

Brilliant, but reclusive author Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) has spent her career writing about exotic places in her popular romance-adventure novels featuring handsome cover model Alan (Channing Tatum), who has dedicated his life to embodying the hero character, “Dash.” While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who hopes that she can lead him to the ancient lost city’s treasure from her latest story. Wanting to prove that he can be a hero in real life and not just on the pages of her books, Alan sets off to rescue her. Thrust into an epic jungle adventure, the unlikely pair will need to work together to survive the elements and find the ancient treasure before it’s lost forever. Honoring Chef Jacques Pépin

Internationally acclaimed Chef Jacques Pépin will be feted in person with the inaugural SIFF Culinary Excellence Award. The SIFF honorarium also includes a $10,000 donation to the Jacques Pépin Foundation.

The five-course dinner will be prepared by notable chefs Ken Frank (La Toque), Michael Howell (Devour!), Roland Passot (Left Bank, La Folie), Seadon Shouse (Timber Cove Resort), Ari Weiswasser (Glen Ellen Star) and Ensan Wong (Cogir). Each course is served with a short food film and are paired with wines from Anaba, Bee Hunter, Breathless, Chateau St. Jean and Viansa.

 

“I am very much looking forward to attending SIFF in March of 2022 and honored to be receiving the first ever SIFF Culinary Excellence Award,” said Chef Pépin. “I also thank SIFF for their generous contribution to the Jacques Pepin Foundation. TV chef, farmer, restauranteur and activist Chef Duskie Estes will be at the screenings of the documentary KITCHENISTAS to talk about her nonprofit Farm To Table organization, which gleans Sonoma County farms to provide food to underserved communities. Attendees will also be treated to her gourmet popcorn during the screenings. The screening events are sponsored by Sonoma Index-Tribune. Sonoma UFOlogist Jim Ledwith will host the screening of his film THE PHENOMENON

This documentary, narrated by Peter Coyote, assembles the pieces of the UFO puzzle spanning over 70 years. Revealing a shocking "hidden history" that began in the late forties and early fifties, fleets of UFO's appeared in the skies over nearly every state in the U.S., culminating in a flyover of Washington, D.C. in 1952.

 

Charlie Chaplin Silent Film Accompanied by Live Music from Musician John Partridge

THE IMMIGRANT

This 1917 American silent romantic comedy short, written, directed and starring Charlie Chaplin's Tramp character is about an immigrant coming to the United States who is accused of theft on the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and falls in love with a beautiful young woman along the way. SIFF Awards:

The SIFF Bay Area Filmmaker Award, presented by Cinelease, will name one Bay Area filmmaker to receive a $10,000 filmmaking package from Cinelease and Film Mare Island. The winner will be announced at the SIFF Saturday Night Awards Celebration on Saturday, March 26 in the Cogir Hospitality Tent.

 

Additional SIFF film awards, as selected by industry jurists, to be named at the awards party ceremony include Best of Categories: English Language Feature, Foreign Feature, Documentary, Short: Animation, Short: Comedy, Short: Documentary, Short: Drama and Short: Foreign categories.

 

Audience Awards, as voted on after each film screening and which include cash prizes, will be awarded in the Stolman Award (Best Feature) and A3 Award (Best Documentary) categories.

 

The 5th Annual SIFF Wine Awards, presented by Safe Harbor Wine Storage, San Francisco Magazine and StaVin, will also be named. Best of Categories include: Aromatic White, Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Dessert, Merlot, Pink Still, Pinot Noir, Port, Red Wine Blend, Rhone Varieties, Sparkling and Zinfandel.

Attending jurists from the film industry judging this year’s slate of films for awards consideration are:

 

Olivier Albou (Producer and International Distribution | Other Angel Pictures): In addition to producing the SIFF Closing Night film THE BUTCHER’S DAUGHTER, Albou’s company has produced and distributed dozens of films worldwide, including THE LAST MERCENARY and SPOILED BRATS, both released worldwide with Netflix last year.

Nate Bolotin (Partner | XYZ Films): Bolotin co-founded XYZ Films with Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian in 2008. XYZ Films, is an independent studio, fully integrated with production, financing, global sales, talent management and US distribution. XYZ Films’ titles include The Raid franchise, 2017 Sundance winner I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore and cult hit Mandy. Recent productions from the company include Joe Penna’s sci-fi thriller Stowaway, starring Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette, and Gareth Evans’ action thriller Havoc, starring Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker.

Elisabeth Costa DeBeauregard (Co-Founder | Storyboard Entertainment): Storyboard Media is a production, finance and global sales company. The company has been involved in films such as 20th Century Fox’s German horror film, HEILSTATTEN, which did close to $10 million in global markets and is working on a sequel. Storyboard went on to produce ARKANSAS, starring Liam Hemsworth, Vince Vaughn, John Malkovich and Michael Kenneth Williams; and sold and produced the large budget film, THE COMEBACK TRAIL, starring Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Zach Braff and Tommy Lee Jones.  Currently, Storyboard is in post-production on MARLOWE, a Raymond Chandler inspired character and world directed by Neil Jordan and starring Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange and Diane Kruger.

 

Miles Fineberg (Director of Acquisitions | Samuel Goldwyn): Fineburg oversees the acquisitions department which has acquired titles such as Oscar winner ANOTHER ROUND and Oscar nominee THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS SKIN. Prior to joining Samuel Goldwyn Films, he was at Terror Films; and began his career with independent production company Sunrise Pictures.

 

Nick Ogiany (Agent | CAA): Since joining CAA in 2009, Ogiony has packaged and arranged financing and distribution for such films as GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE; THE ICE ROAD; WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS; SEARCH; GAGA: FIVE FOOT TWO; THE GUEST; IMPERIAL DREAMS; INSIDIOUS; KODACHROME; THE WIFE; FIRST REFORMED; and BOSS LEVEL, among others. Prior to CAA, Ogiony was in the independent feature division of William Morris Agency (WMA). He began his career in entertainment at HBO Films.

 

MJ Peckos (President | Dada Films): Dada is a full-service distribution, marketing and publicity agency specializing in quality narrative and documentary films for the U.S. marketplace. Recent releases include the award-winning documentaries Torn, The Last Forest, and Old Henry starring Tim Blake Nelson, Confetti starring Amy Irving, Language Lessons starring Marc Duplass and the Nathalie Morales documentaries Picture of His Life, For the Birds, narrative features The Cuban and Raven.

 

Jennifer Siebel Newsom (Documentary Filmmaker | Activist): Siebel Newsom is a filmmaker, advocate, thought leader, and the First Partner of California. She wrote, directed, and produced the 2011 award-winning documentary Miss Representation. As a result, she launched The Representation Project, a nonprofit organization that uses film and media as a catalyst for cultural transformation. Her second film as a director, The Mask You Live In, explores how America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men, and society at large. And, her third film in the trilogy, The Great American Lie, unveils the underlying cultural causes of inequality in America. She also executive produced the Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated documentary The Invisible War and was an executive producer on the Emmy Award-winning documentary The Hunting Ground. She lives in Sacramento, California with her husband, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and their four young children.

The artwork appearing on the SIFF 25th Anniversary Festival Guide and Poster was painted by Chef Jacques Pépin and used with his permission to promote this year’s milestone festival.

 

Veteran screenwriter Robert Kamen has lent some of his most memorable lines from his iconic films (KARATE KID, TAKEN, THE FIFTH ELEMENT and TRANSPORTER) for a set of limited-edition plates. Classically trained in Paris, Wong worked at the French Laundry and was the Executive Chef at Porsche’s headquarters prior to his role at Cogir.

 

Northern California Public Media: Sonoma Valley’s local PBS television, radio and digital station is the Presenting Sponsor of Joanne Weir’s Plates & Places Lunch on Friday, March 25 at 11 AM, in addition to providing broadcast coverage promoting the 25th edition festival.

 

Sonoma Raceway: The Sonoma Raceway VIP Lounge, located inside the Cogir Hospitality Tent, will be named after the prominent motor sports race course and dragstrip.
