Secrets of Inner Space, a short film festival dedicated to examining the Self through cinemaA Film Festival Looks Inside Us
Secrets of Inner Space, a short film festival dedicated to examining the Self through cinema will be screened on February 27th at 7:30 Film Noir Cinema in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Each of the selected films feature mind, body, blood, and/or spirit. The premiere screening sold out on Februrary 1st and the encore is your second (and possibly final) opportunity to see these films in New York City. Engraved above the main portico to visit the Oracle at the ancient Greek Temple to Apollo were these words: “Know thyself.” Can we know ourselves while also being ourselves? We are mysteries! That which is most near is that which is least understood. Secrets of Inner Space will explore our inner oceans in short films from an international array: Lynn Bianchi (NYC) quiets the body to listen to the mind in “The Waiting Pool,” Carey Burtt’s (NYC) “Mind Control Made Easy” offers the viewer a guide to world domination through psychological subterfuge, Rafael Camara (Sao Paulo) joins a visual artist undergoing potentially blinding surgery in “The End of Time,” Martha Colburn’s (Amsterdam) “Sex Ed” offers an animated tour through our reproductive system, Julia DelMedico offers the viewer “Touch,” Alexander Frasse (NYC) shares a glimpse of the Rapture in “The Cataclysm”; Frumma and Simcha Gottlieb (Florida) explain Chassidic meditation by following the “Stream of Consciousness,” Tosh Leykum (Berlin) takes the “Sideview” of life, “The Electro-Magical Spectrum” is revealed by former Juxtapoz Magazine editor George Petros with a score by Robert Lund, Daniel Hishikawa (Japan) offers us insight into our origins in “Eggg,” Tate Steinsiek (Oklahoma and Albania), Mathilde Viene (Paris) provides insight into the minds of animals in “The Zoo,” Joe Whitney (London) of The Flaming Stars offers a road to truth following “The Goat of Fazilka,” and Secrets curator Jeffrey Wengrofsky’s (NYC) documentary on a Holocaust survivor who painted in his own blood, “A Blood Artist,” will rock and shock. (Italics=director in attendance) Each of the Secrets programs selects short films on a specific topic: Secrets of the Deep: Dreams on Film, Secrets of the Heart, Secrets of the Insect World, Secrets of the Intoxicated Life, Secrets of Outer Space, Secrets of the Dead, and the new program examining the Self. Secrets of the Deep and Secrets of Outer Space were awarded Best Experimental Film Program at the 2018 and 2019 Berkeley Video and Film Festivals, respectively.
