Ruben Östlund’s TRIANGLE OF SADNESS Will open the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival

Evolution Cinematography ICON Award recipient - ED LACHMAN.

The 11th annual EMIFF will run October 26th- November 1st inclusive, in the capital city of

Palma, Mallorca.

Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) announced today its Opening Night feature film for its Fall festival, which kicks off next month on the Spanish island.

The Opening Night film has been unveiled by festival founder and director Sandra Lipski as the Palme d'Or winning, satirical black comedy, Triangle of Sadness. Writer/director Ruben Östlund will be in Mallorca to present the film at the historic Teatre Principal on October 26. The wickedly funny commentary on social hierarchy stars Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, Dolly de Leon and Woody Harrelson and follows a celebrity couple who are invited on a luxury cruise for the super-rich – but things begin to go catastrophically wrong.

EMIFF’s 2022 edition will also welcome acclaimed DoP Ed Lachman (Far from Heaven, Carol, The Virgin Suicides, A Prairie Home Companion) to Mallorca, to receive the festival’s inaugural Evolution Cinematography ICON Award. A twice Oscar-nominated cinematographer hailing from New Jersey, Lachman is an iconic figure in the American independent film movement, having served as Director of Photography for a who’s who of filmmakers, including Todd Haynes, Ulrich Seidl, Wim Wenders, Steven Soderbergh, Robert Altman, Sofia Coppola, and Paul Schrader. His numerous awards and accolades include the Independent Spirit Award, the BSC Award, the Golden Frog (CamerImage), the Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography Award (Cannes Film Festival) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from The ASC (American Society of Cinematographers).

Honorees previously announced for this year’s festival include Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners, One Day, An Education) and Spanish actressLaia Costa (Victoria, Only You), who will receive the 2022 Evolution VISION and Evolution NEW TALENT Awardsrespectively.

Now in its 11th year, Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival is recognised as one of the fastest-growing film festivals in Europe and the longest-running physical film festival in Palma de Mallorca. Founded by filmmaker, actress and Mallorca-raised Sandra Seeling, EMIFF has been proudly supported by the Fundació Mallorca Turisme and the Mallorca Film Commission since its inception in 2012.

Using international film to shape a creative community and allowing independent filmmakers to feel inspired, to network and thrive, 2022 sees some major new additions to the usual EMIFF programme, including an inaugural Cinematography Focus, supported by media partners British Cinematographer and Camera & Light Magazine, whereby Directors of Photography from across the world will be invited to participate in panels and networking events at EMIFF.

The full EMIFF screening programme will be announced via a press conference in Mallorca in early October. Additional festival Honorees, the prestigious Opening Night film, other centrepiece feature films and spotlights, and EMIFF’s panels and industry discussions for the 2022 edition are set to also be announced at this time. The Closing Night Film will also be announced in the coming weeks.

For seven days and six nights each Fall, EMIFF’s programme is curated to showcase a culturally diverse, inclusive, and provocative mix of feature films, short films, documentaries, music videos, children’s films, experimental films and animation.

Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival has a clear mission statement; BRIDGING CULTURES – BRIDGING PEOPLE. Known as a welcoming hub for networking, EMIFF brings together the brightest local and international minds in cinema in Mallorca’s buzzing and the culturally rich city of Palma.

With competitive screenings unfolding at the most striking island locations, EMIFF is an ideal place for indie filmmakers to rub shoulders with industry professionals at the festival’s Producers Club, its Pitch Forum, and regular workshops, with the opportunity to win prizes worth up to 25,000€ across the 13 categories of the festival programme from local production company MN Studios.

EMIFF’s Made in Baleares section presents films produced and directed by the most talented

filmmakers from the Balearic Islands. Other programmes include Evolution Wake Up, films and documentaries highlighting important current stories from around the world. and, for the very first time in 2022, Evolution Edge, which showcases films by first time directors with a distinct and avant-garde vision. This programme will help spotlight raw talentin the independent filmmaking world.

The 2021 festival curated over 100 screenings, networking events, panel talks, Island excursions and master classes, attracting over 4,000 guests from over 30 countries.

EMIFF is proud to have been one of MovieMaker’s “TOP 50 Film Festivals Worth The Entry fee” five years in a row, as well as appearing on the 100 Best Reviewed Film Freeway List for 13 months in a row, ranking in the top 1.5% of more than 10,000 film festivals and creative markets around the world.
