Restored Metropolis, Fritz Lang’s screening at Macy's with organ impro

The Philadelphia Film Society, in partnership with Friends of the Wanamaker Organ and hosted by Macy’s Center City, announces a benefit screening of the newly restored Metropolis, Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent sci-fi masterpiece. Grand Court Organist Peter Richard Conte will improvise an accompaniment using the full resources of the Wanamaker Organ while incorporating many of the 'signature tunes' from the original Gottfried Huppertz score.

Taking place in Macy’s magnificent Grand Court, on Saturday, March 19, 2011, the ticketed event will transform the Macy’s store into a nighttime movie palace for the first time in its 100-year history. Viewers will be transported back to the height of the silent era, with the Wanamaker Organ providing a dramatic, orchestral backdrop under ideal listening conditions.
Attendees of the Metropolis screening will take part in a milestone in cinematic history as the picture--the most expensive silent movie ever filmed--is the most complete version of the film available since the original premiered in Berlin on January 10, 1927. Lang’s masterpiece with its cast of thousands was whittled down several times in subsequent years, and eventually about a fifth of the footage was lost. In 2008, a curator at the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires, Argentina, discovered a 16 mm duplicate negative that included 25 minutes of lost material. Utilizing this footage, as well as material from Australian and New Zealand sources, the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung foundation reconstructed the original cut and digitally restored much of the Argentine footage to great critical acclaim.
Tickets are available online through the Philadelphia Film Society, or the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ, Additional VIP Ticket Packages are available for a special pre-concert reception starting at 7 pm in Greek Hall, with wine, hors d'oeuvres, and a brief talk on the film and theatre-organ music by Wurlitzer Organist Rudy Lucente. Discount packages are available for new or existing members of the Philadelphia Film Society and Friends of the Wanamaker Organ. The film screening will begin in the Grand Court at 8:30pm.
