New blood and horror in Telluride’s film festival scene

There’s new blood in Telluride’s film festival scene, and lots of it at the Telluride Horror Show. The newest addition in the festival capital of Colorado will showcase the latest independent horror films, with everything from horror comedies to over-the-top grindhouse gore flicks, in the historic Sheridan Opera House and Nugget Theatre. The festival program includes 16 feature films, over 20 shorts, special guests, and a party or two. If you’re a fan of horror, then you don’t want to miss this.
Master of Horror Tom Holland, the legendary writer/director responsible for some of the most successful films in the horror genre (including "Fright Night" and "Child's Play") comes to the Telluride Horror Show with the world premiere of his “Twisted Tales,” a brand new series of short films created in the great tradition of anthology shows like The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and Tales from the Crypt. Three “Twisted Tales” will premiere at the festival: “Fred & His GPS” (starring AJ Bowen), “To Hell With You” (starring Danielle Harris and William Forsythe), and “Vampire’s Dance.” After the films, Mr. Holland will take the stage for one of the best Q&As we can imagine!
Jon Davison, producer of “Robocop” and “Starship Troopers”, joins the festival as our “vault keeper.” Jon is a horror buff with a huge collection of vintage horror films in his vault. We were able to convince him to dig out his 35MM print of the cult classic "Piranha", directed by Joe Dante and produced by Davison. Jon will be on hand for a Q&A after the film. Begin preparing your questions now!
Chris Alexander, editor-in-chief of Fangoria magazine and our guest host, will conduct the question-and-answer sessions with Holland and Davison, as well as with other attending filmmakers. Alexander is a veteran film journalist, teacher and horror film enthusiast and is thrilled to be a part of the inaugural Telluride Horror Show.
The line-up of independent horror feature films, from all over the world, include “Bitter Feast”, “The Book of Zombie”, “Broken Springs: Shine of the Undead Zombie Bastards”, “Colin”, “I Didn’t Come Here to Die”, “The Last Lovecraft”, “Satan Hates You”, “Shadow”, “Someone’s Knocking at the Door”, “Strigoi”, and “Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives.” FOUR more feature films will be announced in the days leading up the festival.
The Saturday Morning Sci-Fi program includes a line-up of dark sci-fi shorts: “Attack”, “Cockpit: The Rule of Engagement”, “Enigma”, and legendary special effects artist Phil Tippett’s “Mutantland.” Other shorts playing throughout the weekend are “Dead Exit”, “DemiUrge Emesis”, “Elder Sign”, “Recollection”, “Stay”, “The Necronomicon”, “The Violinist”, “Written By”, and three short films from UK director Ashley Thorpe, “Scayrecrow”, “The Hairy Hands”, and “The Screaming Skull”, all based on the Victorian era’s gothic ‘penny dreadfuls.’ More short films will be announced before the festival.
On Sunday morning of the festival, Bobbie Weiner, aka “Bloody Mary”, will host the Zombie Brunch, featuring a zombie short film, the zombie feature “The Book of Zombie”, and an onstage zombie make-up demonstration by Bobbie. You've seen Bobbie's work in the film “Titanic” where she was the special effects make-up artist who transformed hundreds of actors into blue-lipped, icicle covered corpses. She is a make-up consultant to many studios and is one of the leading suppliers of F/X make-up and stage blood for the studios in Hollywood. And lucky for us, she also has her own line of “Bloody Mary” mix, so we’ll be sipping on Bloody Marys during the Zombie Brunch. You'll want to get out of bed for this one...
The festival kicks off on Friday with a pig roast party with attending filmmakers. The party is open to all 3-day pass holders.
