Mark Cranwell has been named Director of Content Acquisition of Babelgum

Mark Cranwell has been named Director of Content Acquisition of Babelgum, the next generation global Internet TV network, it was announced today by Valerio Zingarelli, CEO of Babelgum.

In the newly created position, Cranwell will be responsible for leading Babelgum’s outreach efforts to producers, filmmakers and content creators in support of the new platform’s content strategy. He will report directly to Simon Kenny, Babelgum’s Head of Content Strategy and Advertising, in the company’s London operation.

Regarding the announcement, Zingarelli said, “Having an executive of Mark’s talent even further strengthens our content acquisition team. Simon and his team are aggressively pursuing our strategy to provide our audience with content reflecting the variety and richness they expect to find in content online.”

Simon Kenny added, “We welcome Mark to our growing operation and look forward to his immediate contributions. He brings a unique view of the digital community and strong relationships within the creative community that I know will create many opportunities for Babelgum.”

Cranwell noted, “I am very excited to join Babelgum, which is best positioned to provide fresh and unique content to the consumer audience. The successful track record of our senior executives, sound infrastructure and innovative business model to deliver quality content was very attractive to me and I’m looking forward to joining the team.”

Most recently, Cranwell was Director, Business Affairs, for BT Vision, the broadband delivered video-on-demand offering launched in the UK in December 2006. While there, he was part of the company’s senior management team and responsible for the acquisition of major content for the platform. His remit included negotiating with the major studios and distributors for all film and television content, as well as sport, including the Premier League’s near live rights, music and interactivity. Cranwell also oversaw various regulatory issues on behalf of BT Vision and was on the Board of Directors of the Association of Television Video on Demand (ATVOD), the self-regulatory body governing the video on demand operators in the UK.

Cranwell is a regular panelist and speaker on digital rights at such major industry events as MIPCOM, PACT and numerous other seminars, and is the author of several articles and interviews on the subject of digital media and intellectual property. He also wrote a chapter on copyright in the book Law and the Media. He is dual qualified to practise law in Alberta, Canada, as well as in England and Wales.
