Herbie Hancock, Beastie Boys Among Musicians at SXSW Film Festival

Jazz legend Herbie Hancock and hip-hop icons the Beastie Boys are among the musicians attending the 2006 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival for documentaries screening during the event (March 10-18) in Austin, TX.

Hancock will be at SXSW on Friday, March 17, for the world premiere of Doug Biro and Jon Fine’s documentary, Possibilities, which follows the recording of Hancock’s album of the same name. The Beastie Boys will be in attendance for a Wednesday, March 15 regional premiere of their concert film, Awesome: I Fuckin’ Shot That!. The rap trio will also take part in an interview panel earlier that afternoon, as part of the SXSW Music Conference. The SXSW Music Conference is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2006.

“The roots of the SXSW Film Festival belong to our wonderful Music Festival,” says Film Festival Producer Matt Dentler. “So, it only makes sense that our music documentary program has grown and developed so well over the years.”

The SXSW music documentary program, called “24 Beats Per Second,” will also include: Alexandra Lipsitz’s Air Guitar Nation, Andrew Shapter’s Before the Music Dies, Zalman King’s Crazy Again (following country crooner Dale Watson), JL Aronson’s Danielson: A Family Movie, Jauresti Saizabitoria & Emilia Menocal’s East of Havana (about Cuban hip-hop), Hector Galan’s Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads, Steven Cantor & Matt Galkin’s loudQUIETloud: a Film about the Pixies, Sam Dunn, Scot McFayden and Jessica Joy Wise’s Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, Rupert Williams & James Mackie’s The Passing Show (about the legacy of Ronnie Lane), Alex Hinton’s Pick up the Mic (about the gay/lesbian hip-hop scene), Zach Merck’s Punk Like Me, Zach Niles & Banker White’s The Refugee All-Stars, and Dan Ollman’s Suffering & Smiling (about the influence of Fela and Femi Kuti).
