HD EXPO ended the second day of an expanded conference and exhibition event

HD EXPO ended the second day of an expanded conference and exhibition event with a capacity crowd at the Burbank Marriott. November’s HD EXPO offered two full days of panels which featured award winning experts, intensives, workshops, and a sold out exhibition area. During the event, entertainment technology’s finest presented intimate conversations, 3D screenings, cutting edge panels and intensives to standing room only audiences.

Wednesday’s “Cut To The Chase” panel, sponsored by American Cinema Editors, gathered a few of the top editors working today, including Glen Scantlebury (“Transformers”), Darren Holmes, ACE (“Ratatouille”), Michael Tronick, ACE (“Hairspray”) and Mary Jo Markey, ACE ( JJ Abrams’ upcoming “Star Trek”) in an insightful and entertaining discussion led by The Hollywood Reporter’s Carolyn Giardina. Ted Schilowitz of RED led an enthusiastic and standing room only audience through an in-depth presentation of the hotly debated and highly anticipated RED ONE camera. The interest in the RED presentations was intense and filled to capacity early in the pre-registration process at HD EXPO. Every HD EXPO presents a full array of educational intensives and the November event continued that tradition, offering presentations by Jeff Cree of BandPro Digital, the Autodesk Systems Launch Tour, an Adobe Future of Broadcasting Intensive, and Sony Intensives focusing on the XDCam EX and the XDCAM HD Workflow. Panasonic presented an intensive highlighting their recently released-to-rave-reviews HPX3000 camera.

The exhibition area sold out in advance of HD EXPO, and featured the top manufacturers and technology companies in the industry including Panasonic, Avid, Apple, Canon, Boris, JVC, K 5600, Schneider Optics and many others. Industry organizations, publications and guilds, including ACE, ASC, ICG, SOC, American Cinematographer, ICG Magazine, and HD Sourcebook support HD EXPO and had members and representatives in attendance.

Q: What’s Next, an event within an event, premiered during HD EXPO. Q is a presentation of HD EXPO Inc. and is geared towards decision makers, thought leaders and key influencers. The invitation-only Q pavilion was imagined as a conversation and presentation area for demonstration and discussion of the latest products, and as a gathering place where innovative thinkers meet in a conducive environment. At the heart of Q are Q Chats; the inaugural Q Chats included world renowned video artist
Bill Viola chatting with Leon Silverman (LaserPacific), John Galt (Panavision) chatting with Larry Chernoff (MTI), Saul Orbach (Aguru Imaging) chatting with Dan Dipaola, Robert Primes, ASC chatting with high speed photographer Jim Matlosz, Ted Schilowitz (RED), and Michael Bravin (BandPro Digital). Journalist Jon Silberg chatted with Fred Kramer from Withoutabox, the revolutionary film festival and distribution portal.

HD EXPO unveiled what is set to become an ongoing feature at HD EXPO, 3D Day. The 3D presentations included experts from Sony Pictures Imageworks in an extensive discussion of the 3D workflow from acquisition to exhibition, led by well-known Visual Effects Supervisor and 3D expert Rob Engle. The Multidimensional Conversation Panel, led by Kristin Petrovich, founder of HD EXPO, included Joshua Greer (RealD), Buzz Hays (Sony Pictures Imageworks), Aaron Parry (Main Street Pictures,) and Howard Postley (3ality Digital) and dove deeply into the state of 3D, focused on its creative and real-world applications and it’s seemingly brilliant future. Capping the panel of industry experts was a screening of the most highly anticipated releases including “Beowulf,” and “U2 3D.” Petrovich commented, “The reason that 3D is being debated, discussed and promoted by everyone from commercial producers to icons like Katzenberg, Spielberg and Zemeckis, is because it is phenomenal. The experience of 3D, done properly, is simply an entertainment experience beyond compare. We are honored that we brought together this panel of experts who are the vanguard of making 3D a reality. We are also very excited that we will be making 3D an ongoing part of our presentations and will plan to keep 3D Day as part of our programming.”

At the conclusion of HD EXPO and Q, Petrovich commented, “We are very proud of our efforts here, both in terms of HD EXPO and Q. We launched a two-day show based on the overwhelming feedback we consistently received from attendees that they needed more time to absorb this high-quality information. Simultaneously, we had carefully gathered input from industry leaders which indicated the need for us to launch an exclusive event geared towards decision makers and innovators. Even with careful planning, research and seven successful years of HD EXPO, we knew that these changes were a calculated risk; the response to change is hard to predict. But, based upon the feedback and attendance during these two days, HD EXPO is on the right track. There are more exciting things to come from HD EXPO.”

Petrovich announced dates for 2008 HD EXPO including March 6th 2008 at the Beverly Hilton, June 5th at the Navy Pier in Chicago and October 28 & 29th, 2008 in Burbank.
