Greek Film Festival 2006 delivers farce, tragedy and a box office hit

The 14th Annual Greek Film Festival opens in next month, showcasing an array of award winning Greek films and filmmakers to take audiences from comedy to tragedy and features Greece’s latest blockbuster, Sirens of the Aegean.

The two-week festival, starting Wednesday September 13th, will again take place at Palace Norton Street Cinemas, and will feature four strands of film with over 20 feature length films, including contemporary Greek cinema, documentaries, Greek Cinema classics and a retrospective of Greek Cinema.

“The films in this year’s festival are an extraordinary assortment of genres and tastes, covering everything from frantic farce to gypsy documentary. They are a credit to the diversity of talent in Greek cinema, for both actors and directors,” said Festival Director Helen Goritsas.

A major highlight of the festival is the inclusion of Nikos Perakis’ Sirens of the Aegean, the most successful feature length film from Greece ever. Selling over 1.2 million tickets in Greece, the film is set to be a popular attraction at this year’s festival.

Two of more than 100 films by director Alekos Sakellarios will be screened as part of the festivals retrospective of cinema classics - I Soferina and Moderna Stahtopouta.

Cannes Film Festival award winning director Michael Cacoyannis’s tragedies - Electra, The Trojan Women and Iphigenia, will also be a focus in the festival.

The national festival will be travelling to Melbourne (September 20th- October 4th), Adelaide (September 28th), Canberra (October 12th-15th) and Brisbane (October 19th-22nd).

Tickets are available now from Palace Norton Street Box office or through MCA ticketing both by phone on 1300 306 776 or
online at www.mca-tix.com.
