Flickerfest celebrates shorts for 30 years and is again rolling out the red carpet at Bondi Beach


Flickerfest, Sydney’s Academy® Qualifying and BAFTA recognised short film festival, celebrates 30 years in 2021 and is again rolling out the red carpet at Bondi. Join us this summer as we debut a bespoke COVID Safe festival garden, including The Famous Spiegeltent indoor cinema, an outdoor lawn cinema and festival garden bar.  With over 200 shorts screening across 17 competitive programmes and showcase sessions, Flickerfest 2021 features a glittering lineup of stars in an astounding programme of the world’s best short films selected from over 2700 entries.
Always an audience favourite, the Best of Australian shorts program includes the Australian premiere of Furlough the directorial debut of actress Phoebe Tonkin and the animated black comedy Roborovski directed by actors Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Dev Patel and written by John Collee.
The Best of International programme features the Australian Premieres of the hilarious and quirky short film Davidstarring Will Ferrell and officially selected for Cannes; and delightful New Zealand comedy-drama Frankie Jean And The Morning Star.
Flickerfest hits Bondi Beach from 22-31 January, screening just over 200 electrifying short films from at home and across the world before touring nationally from February to October. Limited tickets are on sale now.
Flickerfest is a COVID Safe event.


Join us under the stars on the red carpet at our 2021 Opening Night Gala, featuring an eclectic and inspiring preview screening of festival highlights followed by an intimate seated after-party in the beachside Festival Garden Bar.

Flickerfest is celebrating LGBTQI+ stories from around the world in our fabulous Rainbow Shorts competition, curated by Sydney-based queer director Craig Boreham, who sees this year’s lineup as a real window into the global LGBTQI+ world right now. 
Catch two inspiring programmes featuring 15 amazing real stories from at home and across the globe all vying for the prestigious Academy® Qualifying award for Best Documentary Short including Pant Hoot, starring famous environmentalist Jane Goodall.
Survival Day is recognised at Flickerfest with an incredible collection of shorts from some of our country’s most talented and creative Indigenous filmmakers from over the past 30 years by guest curator and Flickerfest alumni Dylan River.

An incredible 64 shorts from across Oz will be in the running for the Academy® Qualifying Panasonic Lumix Award for Best Australian Short Film, including the haunting and moving Indigenous drama The Moogai by Wiradjuri/Bundjalung director Jon Bell.

Thirty-seven hot shorts from countries far and wide that will make you shed a tear, laugh-out-loud or inspire you in our Academy® Qualifying International competition programmes, including the stunning Palme d'Or-winning short I Am Afraid To Forget Your Face.
Chortle your way into 2021 with two programmes of hilarious off-kilter shorts from across Australia and the world, including the Palm Springs award-winning Viktor On The Moon from Denmark and France’s fabulous A La Mode.

Romantics will adore our two Love Bites programmes exploring the joys and pitfalls of modern relationships, including TIFF favourite Sinking Ship and the sweet award-winning Irish doc How To Fall In Love In A Pandemic.
Our delightful programme of shorts for shorties and families that will appeal to the kid in everyone, including the charming DreamWorks animation To Gerard and the delightful award-winning Desert Racers from Australian director Aleksandar Vuksanovic.

A one-day journey from shorts to features, FlickerLab gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the latest filmmaking trends with some of the industry’s leading film experts including Lisa Shaunessy, John Collie, Michaela Perske and Serhat Caradee.
